Wish I had taken more videos of the motor, but got kind of busy. I love the sound of a car (or engine) on a dyno! I wish I had the ability to do an engine dyno run so I didn't have to guess and attempt to calculate my true hp numbers based on my chassis dyno runs. But it was still a great opportunity to pick up 25 extra hp from tuning.
A dyno is nice as it gives you a starting point. I am always very excited and extremely nervous at the same time when the motor first goes on the dyno............always thinking you'll see pieces flying when you crank it 6000...........then 6500...........then 7000........then 7500.............listening for evey little sound.........woundering if you set the gap on the rings good enough, or the clearance on the rod and mains was good enough...........hoping you didn't break a ring while putting the pistons in, or that you double checked the rod bolts and 4blt mains....etc. The proof will be at the strip................can't wait!
Nice...I won't be hitting the dyno with mine...wish I could. I'm looking forward to hearing how yours does back at the track as well. I'm still waiting on parts for mine. Had to order new rods yesterday morning...and still waiting on the Cometic head gaskets to get here...it's always something.
Yes, it's always something.........then something else, especially with a drag car.............and drag/street car. We noticed while running on the dyno the rearmain seal was working its way out.........lucky that I have an adapter on the end of the crank for the Chevy flex plate..............and luck would have it that it didn't fail until we were done. Now the motor is back at the machine shop having the 1 piece seal pinned into place so this won't happen again. It never stops.
What heads are you running just curious on your set up if you dont mind sharing I havent run ours on the engine dyno yet but them are impressive numbers looks real nice too.
The heads are some old Trick Flow Race heads that were mod'd by Roush/Yates back in the early 90's. Chambers are 63 and change with 2.08 intakes and 1.65 exhaust. Valve springs are tool steel, with titanium retainers and keepers, 7/16 studs, 3/8" Trend push rods and Beryllium seats on the exhaust only. The next motor will not have TF heads, more than likely they will be Yates style C3 or something with a much smaller combustion chamber...maybe
We r running the Yates C3 Heads they have a unique style exhaust flange so pe prepared for new headers and are slightly taller then a cleveland head but are a very nice unit in my opinion but, just giving you some insight on what I ran into.
I'd love to see some pictures. Yes, the headers on this motor were made by Bill Dawson in SoCal almost 15 years ago..........and were state-of-the art back then. Bill is gone now but I know the owner of SPD in Rancho Cordova, Chris, and he will be helping me with the header design when I go in another direction. He actually mod'd my headers to try and get a little more torque down lower, which did help............so I will be expecting to get new ones with the new motor. I have run across a couple of sets of C3's, both being used, and will have one set tested for hardness before I pull the trigger. My machinest, Bob Gromm who is a head master and warned me that buying used C3's may not be advisable unless they are tested for hardness................as they get soft with age and use.........first thing to raise a red flag are any heli-coils or redone threads...........apparently when they start to get soft threads start pulling out. I was really wanting more HP, but now feel since we didn't flow the heads and because they are so old.............that with some different heads I could have pulled more HP...........this is after the fact though. At least we will race this season with this motor and do something different next year. Would love to hear more about your motor.
The Foundation of ours is an original 70 Boss 302 Block, had to modify the Cylinder Head surface for C3 Heads by Drilling steam holes if you r running anything other then C3 heads youll have to do the same but wasnt hard at all more timely thn anything didnt wanna scrap the Block then went with a custom set dome pistons for the canted valve head and being it was a 347 sent the heads to Rousch with a Roush intake to get them ported and polished to match they did a little port work on the heads also Heads are new havent been run yet and they Told us the custom grind came to go with with all our specs and I ran it by Yates only to get the same Grind but, set me at ease. 650 on the intake 260 Duration and 106 centerline. I have like three Roush intakes extra that I have inherited if you end up doing the build let me know. I fill u in alittle more later. if your interested ill try and post pics.
Yes, I'd love to see pictures if and when you get a chance. The one pair of heads I'll have checked out did come off a 351w block, so at least I wouldn't have to do anything there and I have a spare 351w with 4blt mains................sure love to find a Boss block rather than buy a new one. Appreciate the offer on the intakes as the heads I'm looking at don't come with an intake. We will see what comes together in the next 3/4 months.
I'd love to, but with an open trailer and the 2500 miles one way it's not likely. Now maybe with a closed trailer and diesel instead of my Hemi I would think about it. Just not rigged for something much over 8 hours on the road one way.
I hear ya enclosed trailers on my list before we get to serious in drag racing I wanna be able to lock my stuff up at the track people aren't as honest around here as they should be or used to be I'm all for lending or helping out but I like it returned. This ones going in my kids car I gave it to him because I wanna go a different route a tube chassis with a 500+ cube boss Ive been in the tens and I'm done playing and would like to get my dad and grandpa involved but my grandpas pushing 90 but I think I can get him to make a pass he still drives just got back from FL and he used to race In the 50's and always talks about it so getting my sons car done and to the track has become priority it'll be 4 generations at the track
