so im getting my 9in in the mail here soon, i know i have the close ratio 4 speed top loader, im going to be putting in a 347, this is going to mainly be for the street but i am planing on racing it every once in a while, the housing is coming with 28 spline axels i wasnt sure if i should just get some 31 splines or exactly, any input would be appreciated thanks

When you say you're getting your 9" in the mail what does that mean, the whole thing with center section? You can't just swap the 31sp for the 28sp axles without changing the whole carrier(posi unit if you have one). The side gears are specific to the axle size/spline count.

its basically just the housing, it has not third member (pumpkin) its just the housing with the old axels they had for it they kept the 3rd mem.

Yes, you will need to match axles to whatever pumpkin you buy.

As for 28 spline strength, I trust them. I had 4:10 gears with 28 spline axles in a vintage Bronco that I used to do some really hard off-roading in. Broke and twisted several driveshafts but never broke an axle.

I've broken enough 28 spline axles to know that I'll never run them again unless I know I'm NEVER going to use a sticky tire or race at the drag strip.

Plus now would be the time (before you buy a center section) to consider changing to 31sp axles.

im thinking about it, i figured i didnt really need the third member yet due to no know what gear ration i needed yet so i figured id grab it up before i had to start hunting down another direct bolt it unit

John has a good point about drag racing and sticky tires. My application was off roading so you naturally get a lot of tire slip.

Currie is probably one of the most expensive places to get a third member.
