Name's Eric and I just joined the site a few days ago. Everyone has been awesome so far (y)! Was reading the tech forum here and just thought of a question: I recently got a C-4 out of a '66 Fairlane and, just above the shift-selection lever, there is a half-moon looking metal component with wires protruding from it . It looks like some sort of electronic part. I have no idea what this is. The wires have been cut off and taped. Any help would be appreciated. Hope everyone is having a great day!

P.S.- camera's broken, so pictures are doubtful.

    It's the neutral safety switch.

MapleMav: Thanks! Just a little concerned because there are, like, 4-5 wires attached to it and I thought the safety switch was simple (maybe, with like, 1 wire or something), and very small. Oh, well... thanks again!

Actually its a neutral safty switch and a back up light switch. There should be 4 wires. 2 of them are shorted together when the trans is in park or neutral for your safty switch, and the other two short together when the trans is in reverse for your back up lights.

eric, what are you planning on putting it in? do you already have the convertor for it? just curious as that tranny has a 24 spline input shaft. in1970 they changed to a 26 splines. just a thought to keep in mind as they take different convertors.:)

Don: C-4's going in that '70 Maverick I mentioned in the new member forum. Have a '91 AOD, too, but that's another story. Yeah, I've read about the spline numbers and figure I'll order a converter out of Jeg's, or something. The tranny guy I deal with told me that I'll need to change valve bodies, too, to get a shift kit to work.

    Thanks!

i use hughes convertors. have never had a problem with them yet. they are located on mc dowell, just east of the highway. i would check the price with lopers or someone else before talking to them directly. i don't know about changing the valve body. i didn't change mine. i just sent a 68 c-4 to my guy in tucson. he rebuilt the one in my car 2 weeks ago. it's a 74. blew it up on friday night. brought the car to his shop and took the tranny out on his lift. left it there til monday. went back at 3pm and put it back in the car and was on the way home by 6. he charge me $247.50 and he supplied the parts and had to replace one of the drums. if you want i can e mail you his number. let me know. i'm thinking your guy may be wanting to change to a manual valve body. i shift mine with a b&m megashifter at 5800rpm. :)

Matt, I posted this on another thread but you should be able to buy them at any good parts store. If not, I 'm pretty sure I got one around here somewhere. Its yours if I do. Email me if interested.

Don: Actually, a buddy of mine had a real bad expereince with Hughes. They rebuilt his tranny and he went through the clutches in about a month! Only saw the track twice that month, too! This seemed odd, since he's only making about 320-40 horse at the flexplate. He paid, like, $450 for the previous clutch job with them and took it back to find out what happened. He wanted them to pull it apart and take a look at the clutches (he'd had this problem with their work before, only it took him 3 months to go through the clutches). They pretty much told him to go f*** himself; that it wasn't their problem anymore. We took it to another guy, his name's Don (owner of Old Balls Racing Transmissions) too, and he said something about something being wrong with the reverse band due to poor re-assembly. Haven't gone back to Hughes since. I'll admit, they do good work, just not in this particular encounter. Sure, I'd like your tranny guy's number! Thanks! Also, the valve bodies of '68+ C-4's will accept shift kits, so he's only talking about swapping mine. 5,800? That's what mine shifts at! WOW! Long response! Thanks again!

MaverickMatt: Yeah, I'll probably be needing mine. Sorry. You know, it's a street car thing :D.

Just wondering how they can charge 450 for a clutch job? A whole rebuild kit is around 40.00 and the labor is 410.00??? A little steep in my book, but there may be more to the deal than is known. I feel bad charging my fellow racers 150.00 for a race rebuild and valve body modification with an H servo that I supply. I think my price sheet just went up a bit, course thats with the carry in trans too. Just a note on rebuilds for hot rods, if they set the clutch pack clearance's according to the Ford spec's, and do not use five clutch set ups and larger servo's, it is no wonder they only get a few good runs on them. Don: Thanks! I'll check with your guy and see what his deal is. I can always use more "car contacts." The guy I'm dealing with now wants about $575 for a rebuild, different valve body, and shift kit. Any idea what your guy might charge? Won't hold ya to it, promise!:D

Old Guy: Jeeze! Wish you lived in Arizona, too! I'd be takin my stuff to you! Don's here, I live here... see? All the cool people live in Arizona!:D Yeah, Hughes is pretty steep if you take your stuff directly to them. Some people are pretty good there, but, I think they had a rookie working on my buddy's tranny. An un-supervised rookie. I know new people need to learn too, but, the company should be willing to clean up after their mistakes.
