Okay, so I bought this 8" axle housing from a dude a few years back and noticed that it had a third "dimple" in the center dome in between the two usual dimples. In the same location as the pre-67 filler plug area. When I inquired about it, the guy told me that it was a housing that was slated to receive a filler plug, but, one was not actually installed due to the location change after '67 and the dimple remained plug-less.

Thing is, I didn't really believe him, but the dimple is almost perfectly round and fairly deep. More than a simple dent. Have any of you guys heard of a 3-dimple 8" housing where the center dimple does not actually have a plug tapped in and installed?

I figure he may have just dropped the housing or had something dent it at some point and BS'd me.

Sorry bout the double post. Just found a housing in the "for sale" section of the clssifieds with the same exact dimple. What is the purpose of this dimple? Something to do with oil control?

Making a dimple before installing a filler plug sounds a bit dubious to me also. But 2 housings like that? Is it a perfect dimple? Pretty hard to make a dimple in that kind of steel. You peaked my curiousity.:hmmm:

Yeah! What is that 3rd dimple for, anyways? I may be nuts, but most of the 8" housings I've seen have only two dimples. My old one (in the Mav currently) has only two dimples.

Since mine has the three I am not sure which dimple is different. Maybe your other is missing the dimple rather than these having an extra haha!

Probably has something to do with the gear oil, maybe acting like a oil slinger?

That's what I figured too, but, the differential in the classified link is from a Mercury. Did your housing come out of a Mercury, too, Gene? I know you have one, but, it's not like a Ford housing from a junkyard or something, is it? What I'm driving at is: could this be something Mercury did?

I would think they are the same, Mercurys and Fords were built on the same assembly line. It's probably more of a year to year change than anything.

Hmmm... time for me to start researching this!

Probably a total waste of time, probably not gonna see it through to the end, probably gonna forget about it in a few hours now that I'm reasured my housing wasn't damaged. But, I now have something to waste my time on for the next few minutes.

    Google don't fail me now!

Well, this thread made me go and peek at the 3 rears I have in the shop, from an original 1970 grabber, plain jane 72 Mav and a 68 Cougar - all have the dimple as pictured ........ :)

I have a Mercury.. I am thinking along the lines of it being a slinger.
I had the 3.00 diff also.. Yours?
