He has a 79 Ford F100. 302,C4. He's driving and its goes to shift to 3rd and no third. He pulls over and gets me. There is tranny fluid in it, just wont go in gear. I am thinking converter. Can anyone help him/me with this??
No 3rd in C4 Several things could cause this, modulator, low fluid level, vacumm leak or my #1 choice is the 2 to 3 shift valve is stuck in the valve body. Also governor trouble but not the convertor. If it was bad normally will affect all gears changes etc. Possible clutch problem too. Did a C4 for a friends race car and after "HE" installed it, no 2to3 shift. The old convertor was still full of "Dirty fluid" and reinstalled to save buying another few qts. of fluid. I pulled the valve body off and took the 2-3 valve out and cleaned it after finding it stuck. Dirty fluid is a killer on these internal parts that are working in such micro close tolerance. Just my thoughts on it from the easy chair.
The first things I would do is check to see if it has vacume going to the modulator the other is see if the kick down rod has come off and/or is in a bind in the down position. did this happen all at once? is the fluid red? does it have a late 1-2 shift?when it goes in to drive is it actually going back to 1st? if a c-4 loses vacume it will do exactly what you posted.
C4 After rereading the post, it says won't go in gear after pulling over. Am now thinking that he is referring to no movement at all foward rather than just hung in 2nd. Robert, I did forget about the kickdown lever, had it happen on my 73 Mav. Small spring that holds it foward had broken and would not complete 2to3 shift. Installed new spring and wal-la, good as new. Thanks for jogging the "old brain". Also, thanks Tom for the encouragement on the easy chair. 40yrs at one job is enough. Let's see, where did I put that brewski or was it prune juice?
