I went to a pic-'n-pull to wander around and look for a Maverick fender emblem Saturday, I came home with an engine. Suprise! It was a Circus, "Half Price Day", total mob scene. One of the local spanish radio stations was broadcasting from a booth in the parking lot. Anyway there was a (previously) really nice 91 mustang 5.0/ auto/ convertable. It was hit on the right front and totaled. The trans and entire exhaust was already removed, so there was this really clean, unmolested (it REALLY looks like it hasn't been opened up before) forged piston roller cam 302 just sitting on the engine mounts. I pulled the plugs (bosch platinum) and they looked great. The oil was OK. I figured "what the heck", I needed a replacement power steering pump for my daily driver 90 mustang anyway! The only (big) downside was that speedometer was gone so the milage is unknown. I hired a couple of kids with tools to pull it for $50 and the engine cost $62.95. From making a deal with the kids to driving away was one hour. I took longer to unload it from my truck, squirt LPS3 into all the holes, and seal it up for storage.

I will see how the stock bottom end measures out, this might be a was to go-fast for cheap! I have never been a guy to half-ass major engine work, but I might be able to re-ring & bearing it! I have heard from many sources that the stock forged TRW pistons wear really well, and that the odds that this is possible are good. Car-Craft (Hot Rod?-I saved it somewhere) did it, used a set of AFR 165 heads and pulled 400 HP on the dyno with the stock roller cam and a 750 Speed Demon carb. This engine might be a lot of fun with AFR 185's and a hotter cam in my Grabber! No matter what, I got the power steering pump and at least a cheap engine core. It even came with a freshly overhauled A/C compressor.

Man, that is a great deal. A radio station was actually broadcasting from
    a junkyard. That's funny.

    Congrats on the score.

I've been to Harry's U-Pull-it in Pennsylvania. They actually had a snack bar with hot and cold food and drink the last time I was there ...

man, i went to a junkyard last thursday. they had 31 mavericks. i asked the guy how much for a bumper. he said they get $250 but you get all the brackets too. laughed myself right down to the yard down the street. asked this guy down the street about a 1968 c-4 tranny. said he gets $125. asked to look at one he had. it was a 68, just the one i needed. talked alittle bit about racing to him, seems he does some road racing. asked him if he could do any better on the price? he said if it's for a race car give him $50. couldn't get the money out fast enough.:)

    $50 for a C4? Jeez.....and all this time I thought $25 was too much.

Usually get 'em for $20-$30 from the scrap metal recyclers. Bought 2 powerglides the other day, one broken case 1.76 low, other broken bell 1.82 low. Got 'em both for $20. Sold the 1.82 planetary for $77 (ebay) and cut the bell off of the one and sold the case for $76.

Oh...and yes, I kept the other 1.76 planetary. Can't have too many of them!

DG, they hired a guy a while back that is supposed to disassemble all of the transmissions and scrap the cases for bare aluminum. He disassembles them with a 6 lb sledge hammer....doesn't know what wrenches are for apparently. Lately we just have to go up there and hope that this idiot hasn't taken any apart and we gather them up as fast as we see 'em. That being said, there is a pile of parts that we go through as well...found a 1.82 PG carrier yesterday but left it...have about a dozen already. Saw tons of C4, C6 stuff too but was too lazy to pick through the junk for the "gold". Maybe next monday I will go through it again, as long as they don't let ol whats-his-face work on any of them.

The disassembly guy reminds me of my brother in a way:slap:
