So, I am not that mechanically inclined when it comes to cars. Can anyone tell me how to check what size rear end I have on my 71 Maverick, or tell me what comes stock and what size drum brakes are all around?

Any and all information is appreciated!

    -Frank from San Jose, CA!

If your car is still stock, they all came with an 8" rear end.

The I-6 cars came with 9" drums, 2.25" in the rear and 1.5" front
the V8 cars came with 10" drums, 2.25" in the rear and 1.75" front

Some 250 engine I-6 cars also came with 10" brakes, depending on how it was optioned when built.

    Hope this helps ............ :thumbs2:

Should be an 8 inch rear. Which engine do you have and do you have 4 or 5 lug wheels?

I have the 200 I-6 and they are four lug wheels. Replacing all of the brakes hopefully this upcoming weekend. I would like to convert it to disk brakes, but just redoing the drums would be a lot faster I would assume and make it safer to drive in the mean time.

Then you have the 9" ones I listed above. When drum brakes are properly maintained they work very well. The trouble is, compared to disc brakes they do require more work to keep them performing properly. If you have limited skills working with drum brakes I strongly suggest getting some help from a skilled brake person.

I have someone to help teach me how to work on the brakes. I might not be mechanically inclined, but I'm smart enough not to trust what little skills I have when it comes to working on cars. Not to mention that's why I'm here. To learn and pick the brains of the people that know. Would you be willing to point me in the right direction of a site that would have good parts, at a decent price?

Thanks everyone for all of the help. Really having lots of fun with this car!

So I'm looking for the front drums and summit only has 10" drums. The front and rear would both be 9" right?

Yes, 9" and they can be tough to find for the fronts. Most parts can be found right at your local parts stores, like spring kits, wheel cylinders and shoes. Rears seem to be available yet at parts houses but front drums can be tricky to find.

Often, unless rusted or already turned, a machine shop can resurface your old drums for way less than buying new. You won't really know what condition they are in until you get them off the car for inspection.
