so im getting ready to put my motor in after i figure out this situation. i recently went down to pick a part and grabed this alternator........http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Duralast-Alternator?itemIdentifier=310916.....payed 30 bucks for it, i had it tested at autozone, it passed 3 times. so i got it wired up and its charging, but heres the problem. watching it with a volt meeter it got the battery up to 17 volts then i shut it off. how does this altenator work to where it shuts off charging or does it need something else. it works perfect on the motor cause i was able to run a 30" size belt, i have the serpentene setup. it basically keeps charging. any ideas?

So the battery keeps charging? When it runs? I'm confused

17 volts is too high...I think it should be 13-14 volts.....With 17 you're gonna boil the acid out of it......The voltage regulator is supposed to control that

The battery is good. The altenator needs to see a positive before u start it. The once its running it statts charging. My dad and i kept watching the battery to see if it would stop chraging. Figuring it would shut off charging at 13 or 14. So we watched it up to 17 and we shut it off. Thoughtthat the regulater in the alt would shut it off but that didnt do it. So im wondering if theres maybe supposed to be some kind of limiter on the positive lead to the battery. I looked at the gm wireing diagrahm on autozones website and it shows the wire going to a alternator indicator. Have know idea what epse it could be. Maybe i should take it off and test it again. But if its charging its working. But then again it could be the regulater in the alt. No idea. Want to make it work cause its small and it fits really nice on the motor.

I keep getting an Autozone system error when I try your link! Some alternators have a small terminal lead that also needs to be connected to the battery +, to sense the voltage. If this is not connected, the alternator will keep charging. You should be able to Google a diagram for your particular alternator. This will list all the connections necessary! :)

The altenator came off a truck. Those use a 1 wire comnnector. The one that came off the van uses a 2 wire connector. So maybe the other wire i need to run down to the battery so it tell the altenator to shut off.

THE alternator charges the battery when its fully charged the regulator shuts the alternator off when the battery gets low again the regulator kicks on the alternator again and the cycle starts over make sure you have good connections and everything is hooked up correctly and grounded correctly plus you may want to get your regulator checked that may be the problem

So is there away to test the aternator regulator to see if its bad. Or do i need to take it in again and get it tested.

Sounds like you got a defected alternator if the built-in regulator is not cutting it off.

Well. Im gunna try that other wire to the battery and see if that works. If that doesnt work im taking it back to autozone ill test it again. If its bad ill go get another one.

Some voltage regulators require a dash light to work...
