hello, i would like to find out what the cost (ball park) would be to repair the cowl on my 72 mav. iam in the middle of a heater repair and when i looked at the cowl the hat is more than half gone. iam going to do a red green repair until i have money to get it fixed. with the dip in the cowl no wonder they rot.
I think he means, stop and go. Do a little, drive it and then go back to it later. I am only guessing but do you intend to use spray can primer/paint and some type of tube sealant until you can do the real repair? If so, that is what most would do. Maybe some rust converter products or encapsulators(sp?) to prevent further rot. Some here have done this repair. If it is hired out, some estimate it running near $1,000. The consensus is that it is easier with a shell as you don't have to worry about exposure, you can work from the engine bay etc. Seth
But Mustang shops can buy repair panels. In our case it is twice as much work. You have to find a doner car, cut the cowl out of that and clean the panel up. Then cut the panel out of yours. Plus there is an extra brace from the cowl to the top of the fender aprons that the Mustang dont have. $1000 would be a real good price if it is done correctly.
1 more thing. Realistically, you could probably buy a welder, compressor and the tools you need cheaper than you can get someone else to do it. No time like the present to learn. In the long run, you will save bunches and learn lots.
OH, you mean the "Red Green" repair. I actually had to do a Google for the show. Never seen the show. The guy has a Duct tape add on his site. I read through some of the episode summaries and found it rather amusing.
thanks for the idea of buying my own tools i guess with the maverick the welder will be put to good use. the only problem is that i don't have the room to keep it. about red green its a great show on pbs stations my favorite show was the one when he turned a chevy into a bbq with the wipers spreading the sauce coming out of the squirters.
http://www.redgreen.com/ I'm partial to the episode where he makes a catamaran out of heating ducts. Too bad he's planning to retire soon.
Has anyone tried repairing cowl ducts with fiberglass, like the stuff POR 15 sells to repair floor boards and trunks?
