Hey, just did a bit of reading on the 255 V8. Anyone ever try to put one in a Maverick? Do they even still exist?
Same size as a 302. Not a lot of point to the small motor unless gas mileage was the only goal. I imagine pretty hard to find at this point, too. Early 80s only.
Don't waste your time! They can be found, but parts are hard to get and performance parts are even harder.
221-260-289 were the only 5-bolt V8 blocks. Ford changed to 6-bolt in 1965. The 255 were produced for 3 years only 1980-82
It's a small bore 302 replacement. I had one in my first car (82 Tbird) it was gutless. I still have a 255 block that I use for a mock-up, that's about all its good for.
There's a guy on cardomain that runs one in his maverick http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2078667/1975-ford-maverick I haven't been on there in 5 years, but I remember all these things for some reason.
Very interesting. I knew someone here would have information. My goal is to pull the 302 out and rebuild it to a nice performance but nothing crazy. Try and maximize MPG over burning tires. I don't plan on doing any Steve McQueen Bullit imitations.
My brother had a 1982 Mustang GT. He thought it was the baddest car around. He got whipped in a drag race by an Escort GT....found out he really had a 255....sold the car to my sister.
My Tbird got whipped, absolutely whipped, by a 65 mustang with a 170 with a miss. It was hard to go to school the next day.
Same story, a guy at the dealership I worked at had one in his GT, he did some work to the motor, and it was still a dog, I saw it leaving in the back of the junk mans truck one day.
Had one in our 81 mustang GLX. Did a timing chain and a 302 factory 4 barrel iron intake on it and a motorcraft 4 barrel. It ran great and increased power a ton over stock. It still only ran a blistering 17 second quarter mile. It did beat my buddies 67 with a custom cam and 3 carb set up. He ran a 18. I wouldnt even waste my time bolting one in a Maverick. Just build a nice stock 302 and tune it well. You'll just have to put your foot into a 255 to get it moving and may even end up worse on fuel than a stock 302.
