Well, the 69 and very early 70 blocks were 9.48 deck height, the mid 70 through 74 blocks with 9.5 deck height are actually about 8/10lbs heavier, and all the weight is in the main bearing area. I just paid $350 for a std bore 71 block that had been mag'd/cleaned. The current block in the car is a 408 (I will be using the H-beam rods/4330 crank and Probe pistons in the $350 block. The old motor did a 9.801 last year in the Maverick and was tired(and it was a 72 block)...................I never went over 6800rpm and will also use this as a limit on my rebuilt stock block 408. Oh, did I mention the motor had been built in 1999 by CHP and was still running strong................early stock blocks are really good and I believe can handle 700hp.................If you are going to be spinning a motor over 6500rpm you had better think twice about external balancing and do it internally if you want it to live a productive life on the strip. As long as you don't spin it too much I believe the earlier blocks can do 700hp.............the later blocks, well 8/10lbs less material in the main web area is a LOT. IMHO
The good thing about cubic inches is that it brings the power band down, so you can make the same amount of HP as a High reeving 5.0L at a lower rpm
