Hey guys, I took my '74 Maverick out to my brother-in-law's shop to put on the new upper and lower ball joints and the new master cylinder. Mission accomplished. But on the early morning drive out I turned on the heater, and even after driving for 30 minutes it was blowing cold. The controls worked as far as the fan goes and as far as the selector goes, but no warm air. We pulled the vacuum operated valve that lets the hot water go to the heater core and that didn't help. Any other ideas to check?
While I'm here, take a look at these vehicles at his shop that they have been working on!

Cool pics. I have one of those twin i beam badges. Wonder if anyone needs it.

    Are your heater hoses hot?

If your car is an A/C, check that the bypass valve isn't seized.

Good thought Don, the thermostats will also fall apart in side the engine, and cause no heat.:tiphat:

The heater hoses got warm, but nothing near hot. I stopped at O'Reillys and bought a thermostat and put it on, I will drive the car tomorrow and see if that helps. DDB, where is that bypass valve that you mentioned?
    Thanks guys!

Either heater valve is seized or heater core is clogged.

The heater valve it attached to the firewall on the passenger side, follow the heater hoses.

I wud start at the stat. If the car has a reliable temp gauge, u can 1st. determine wheter it's coming up to proper temp to get the hoses hot. Then frm there I wud go w/ some of the mentioned suggestions.
1,) Did u pull a vac test on the con valve? Is it opening?
2.) Hve u had heat B4 and it just stop working?
3.) Do u know the condx of the heater core?

Okay guys, here's where I'm at: I detached the heater hoses and flushed out the heater core. It flushed fine, no problem, but the water was a bit brownish. I also replaced the thermostat. I checked that valve just on the motor side of the firewall and it is wide open by default. Added water, started the car, let it run, saw the the thermostat opened and the water circulated and got warm. Felt the air, barely barely warm after 20 minutes or so of running. If I switch it to cool it does get a little cooler, switch it back to warm again, just the slightest bit warm. I have only had the car a couple of weeks and this is the first time that I have tried the heat, it is supposed to get pretty cool here the next few days. One more thing, don't know if it makes any difference, but I have had water pump replaced.
Any ideas? I just don't think that the water is circulating through the heater core.
    Thanks,
    CommieHook

Have u ck the temp control cable going to the heater box to make sure the door is opening all the way? That's abt the only other thing I can think of.

I will make a wild guess, some ford heaters will not work if the hoses are backwards.Try switching hoses carefully.:hmmm::tiphat:

Is the car A/C or heat only? ... two entirely diff set-ups.

If it is A/C, you might want to check to see if the fresh/inside air flap is operating. It is located at the far passenger side of the box, and is vacuum controlled. There is a grille at the end of the box, and you can see it work from there (if you are upside down in the passenger seat ... may want to get a skinny teenager to help you look). If it is always blocking that grille, then you are always having outside air running through the box. It opens to allow only cabin air through it.

The vacuum controllers on these cars don't age well sometimes, and that is close to the control panel in the dash.

remove the coil wire and the return hose from the engine side. spin it over and see if water comes out.
