I have a 20t gear, and it is black. I got it for the 3:00 gear, and the one in my car now is for the 2:79. Gonna change them out tonight, and I will let you know.

Jerry; thanks, that is what I needed. The 20t gear I have is black, and it doesn't mention a black gear. Maybe it is discolored by heat or wear. Thanks,

The ford 21 tooth gear is purple that is the one I am using. I got it at my local dealer. It is listed in the Ford Racing Catalog Part # D0OZ-B

I believe the original in my car was a tan one that was 19 teeth

The link above is to TCI parts and it looks like their colors are different

    In the Ford catalog

The black gear is listed as a 20 tooth gear for a manual trans and the 21 tooth for the manual is red I was talking for an automatic in my post above

I just put in the black gear, a 20 tooth gear, and took out the tan 18 tooth, that was for the stock 2:79 gear. It went on correctly, and it came from a 3:00 gear. Hope it works out ok. We shall see!!!!!

My original tranny in my car with 2.79's only had 16 teeth. Must have had a diff. number of teeth on the drive gear than yours. My 20 tooth got me closer, but not close enough. Hopefully it will work for you.

Unfortunately I think the right number for me is 22, which doesn't exist. My problem was I not only changed to 3.0 gears, but I swapped trannys and didn't know about the drive gear having different numbers of teeth between trannys. Mine came out of the car I got the 3.0 gears from, which incendently had a manual tranny in it. Most of the websites say the manual trannys use the opposite angle on the gears, but mine didn't. I did see one site that said the gears were interchangeable between the 3-speeds and the C4's. It looked close enough to me so I tried it and it does work. I Think I'll pop the tailhousing off that tranny and see how many teeth were on the drive gear. Not that that really helps me. :smash:

I looked again and it does look more blue than green where the wear pattern is, I suspect the rest is a bit discolored.
