Hi every body I just joined.
my nickname is Ernie, here is my story.
after my daughter totaled my Lancer, we found a 74 maverick 6 cyl. automatic with 58,000 miles on it. It ran good, later she had an accident and one thing led to another. and we had a dilema overhaul the engine or replace it. we choseto build a "wanabe grabbe aer" We found a shop willing to do it. Now we we have a 74 maverick with a (89 Mustang) 5.0 HO and a 5 speed on the floor transmission. electronic distributor 850 cfm Holly jetted down to 750cfm. Its a on going project, but our major problem is the clutch cable it keeps either burning (too close to exhaust) or shearing at the fire wall..Two Questions does any one knows excactly how long is the cable supposed to be? what is the correct routing

    Welcome! :Welcome:

As far as your clutch cable issue, I think there are a few members here that are using cable driven clutches. Hopefully someone who is can chime in. I assume by 5-speed you mean a T5?

Another alternative is to use a hydraulic clutch setup for a T5. This of-course requires some work, including mounting a hydraulic master cylinder to the firewall, attaching it to the clutch pedal, running a hydraulic line and installing a hydraulic slave cylinder onto the transmission. There are also a few members using this type of setup.

Here is an article that may help:

I just found out from a 74 maverick owner who also did the same conversion, only he used a T4 4 speep trany, and I belive I do have a T5. apparently my cable is too long, and he suggested a 90 - 92 mustang cable. I do however need to get a 79 + pedal that is adjutable as mine is not properly lined up with the firewall. Oh by the way I looked into Hydraulic cluthces and I found there are two types internal and external either way I was looking at $1500 + /- more
