What is the proper method of filling a dry power steering system? I have new hoses & pump. Thanks- Seth
Good question....I always thought they were a self purging system...but being totally dry...I'm not sure.
I do it one of two ways. first add fluid, lift front wheels off ground and turn the wheels back and fourth, keep adding till full. The other way is to add fluid and pull a vacuum. I use a hand pump. then add fluid till full.
Disconnect the coil wire, then fill the reservior up to the top. Then have someone crank the car over really quickly while you check the reservoir and refill as needed. You could do this yourself too but it will take longer. Keep filling until the system is full and the level doesn't go down in the reservoir. The reason for this is to avoid sucking air into the pump, and then pumping that into your system and making your pump cavitate. You may also want to bleed the fluid out of the rack too if you haven't changed the fluid in it. Then when you're all done, put it up on jack stands and turn the wheel lock to lock and hold it at the lock for 20 secs, do this until no bubbles are coming up through the reservoir and power steering feels good.
Power steering Fill the pump. Put the dip stick and start the engine for a few seconds. Turn it off and refill the pump. Run it again for a few seconds. Turn it off, fill the pump. Then restart it and slowly turn the wheels both ways all the way. Center the wheels, check the fluid level and fill to proper level. Look at how they do it at the factory. Fill it and run it, then check the level again. It's not a big system or rocket science.
Thanks for the replies. I was not sure if there were any tricks to working the air out. I have added fluid-being careful not to overfill it. So far, no power steering. I'll get the front off the ground and move it back and forth tomorrow. Thanks again for all the replies. Seth
