Driving the stallion to the MCCI show on Saturday is the first time I've driven that car more than a few miles at a time since I've owned it. Couple of things I need to get worked out. 1.) When the engine was painted, it was pulled from the car. When I got it back, it was leaking trans fluid. I had the pan gasket changed, but it's still leaking. I don't have a lot of experience with transmissions, so what do I start looking for? 2.) Whenever I go to check the trans fluid, the dip stick is pushed up/out of the tube a couple of inches. I've pushed it back in several times, but it always ends up sticking out. Is there some kind of breather or vent on the trans that is plugged, causing excessive pressure? 3.) First time I've had the car on the expressway. Drives pretty good until I get up towards 70 mph. At that time I start to hear a "hollow kind of echo" noise, and I feel a "slight" vibration on the floor board. If I back down to 65 or so, it seems to go away. Is this a transmission thing as well (thinking since I can feel a vibration)? Could the trans not be bolted correctly to the engine? Could the drive-shaft be out of balance? My car has a slight vibration around 70 mph, if I let off the gas..but I didn't have the drive shaft balanced after it was shortened. I asked Pete (Mavman72) if his car had any vibration, he said "Yes, it's a Maverick"
LOL, I know Mavericks vibrate, but there is something going on... the yellow mav doesn't do this. The sound it makes is hard to describe, almost sounds like an exhaust leak echo, but it's not. Darren, where is that vent located?
The vent on a C4 is at the top front of the extension housing. They rarely plug. As for leaks the most common are: 1. kick-down lever O-ring 2. pan gasket 3. manual lever seal 4. front or rear seal 5. extension housing gasket 6. pump gasket Vibrations can be worn U-joints, bad mount, loose rear busing or bad driveline balance. As far as transmission goes. The only seal I've had trouble with on mine is with the passing gear cable sticking out the side. I must have jammed it up when I ran the gear through and I now leak there . Best way to find the source is to wipe it down and start the car, run it around the block, park and check where it's leaking from. I rebuilt my c4 tranny in my daily driver and it has pushed the dipstick up a few times. I assume it's vibrations causing this . Both of my cars had the vibration problem you mentioned at higher speeds Replacing the U-Joints fixed one car. All new exhaust fixed the other. So could be leak or drive-shaft problem like mentioned. The only gear that goes through the side of the C4 is for the speedometer - not passing gear. Passing gear is hit when the "kick-down" lever id at full travel at speeds below 50 mph. At speeds above that it just increases pressure to the clutch packs to avoid slippage.
My C4 leaked like a sieve when I got it. It was the manual lever (gearshift lever) The seal goes in from the inside of the trans. So I took the opportunity to try my hand at rebuilding it. I bought the B & M rebuild kit with the shift kit included. $200. The performance difference is remarkable. I haven't noticed any vibrations and I've cruised my mav down the freeway as fast as 80.
i would deff check the vent too and for the vibration your drive shaft working angle may be wrong.... thats something most people don't always check ive found....
"for the vibration your drive shaft working angle may be wrong" How do I check for that? The car was put on a dolly when I took it to PA, so the drive shaft was removed. I thought I put it back on in the same spot, but could be wrong...
