I took the family out to the dragstrip for the Friday Night Dragraces. A lot of the usuals were running, then out of nowhere comes this brown 4 door Maverick with a loud rumble (open exhaust) . I watched him beat a turbo Neon and a 71 Mach 1 and then went to talk to him in the pits. He had a 72 with a Holley carbed 5.0 Cobra motor and 5 speed out of a 93 Mustang. It was his first time out with it and he did pretty well for street tires with a 14.00. I have been going to this track for about 20 years and have never seen a 4 door maverick make a pass before. Pretty cool . I hope he is there in a few weeks for the next round.
Hey Bully, where abouts do you go up there. When I lived in Omaha, we raced at Flightland airport near Irvington. Or went to Lincoln airport sometimes. This was in the 50's and 60's(no christmas tree or timing systems either). Was wondering if they use that new complex off I-29 now or some other one out west. Do they still have the car show off 84th? Saw it on one of my visits last year. Heard Jim Duffack still has the double ended 50 something Mercury. Lots of memories from the 40+ years I lived in big O town. Driving at Sunset and Playland too, lots of fun for this old guy in those days. Don't get back much anymore but still drive around and look at the old haunts etc. Just for info, I have run my 4dr 73 Mav at our strip once, 250 auto. Times were pretty dismal to say the least( like 14's in 1000ft) but is still fun anyway. Thanks for listening to me ramble.
Most of you know that I'm not all that partial to 4-doors, but I actually wouldn't mind turning one into a drag-car...
I believe it was either Bob Glidden or Gapp & Roush that campaigned a 4-door Maverick in NHRA Pro Stock back in the '70s. Pretty successfully as I recall...
it was gap and roush it was called the "tijuana taxi" they took advantage of the wheelbase.. really kicked some butt! it was bob glidden had a pinto in pro stock also a mustang II, farmont, thunderbird and a probe. as you could see i was a bob glidden fan... was the only ford in pro stock for a really long time
Hey Old Guy, Yea, they still have the car show on 84th st. I don't go very often because of the congestion around there . If you don't get there early in the afternoon you don't get a good spot usually. The best dragstrip around here is at Scribner which is about 60 mi from me. Its now called Nebraska motorplex. Pretty nice track really, not the best but decent for an ex-runway from the old Air Force Base. I raced there when I had cars worth racin' . You are right about the new Mid-America-Motorplex but they only run half a race with their 1/8 mile strip , mostly kids. Its meant to be an open track/road course facility. I know the lady who runs it but I have never made it out there yet. It is supposed to be pretty nice and attracts a lot of club racing from Porsches to Vipers etc.. With Sunset and Playland defunct, there is really no place close to circle track around here. If you do make it up here anytime in the forseeable future, PM me and we'll have to get together.
Hey Maverick Man...I was a Glidden fan too. Yup, he really kicked all the brand-x butt! I remember there was one year he ran a Plymouth Arrow...and still kicked everybody's butt. I used to go to the US Nationals every year (I'm only an hour away) and I'd always hang around the Glidden's pit as much as the other half would let me. No more Fords in Pro Stock these days and I totally lost interest....
im a Dyno Don Nicholson fan myself, never heard of glidden... but dyno don ran a 2 dr maverick with a 427 cammer (SOHC). it was pretty sweet.
