So trying to get the old distributor back on after having one of those HEI aftermarket distributors on the 73 Maverick, I find my self needing to know if I need to get a regular coil and also what is an external resistor.
How do I know if I need one or if I need to get one.
Moreover, What purpose does this resistor has in my ignition system?
I am putting a points distributor with the pertronix conversion back if it helps to understand my question.

You need a 1.6 ohm coil and your resistor is already build into the wiring harness unless you changed it to run the HEI

Also if memory serves me right the Petronix instructions say to run it off a full 12V anyways.

Here is my dilemma; The previous owner converted from 6 in line to V8.
Then he installed the so called HEI that is ran by a single wire in the harness running from the switch.
When he ran the HEI he somehow eliminated the wiring going to the external coil and now I do not know if this harness had the resistor built anywhere.
If I run the coil to the hot wire from the switch, and then run the red wire from the distributor to the coil, run the black wire from the distributor to the negative terminal on my coil, it should work right? and how do I find out about the resistor? Is there a way to find out?
Is this resistor something With a shape I can find under my hood?
    Thanks for the help.
