Ok this may be a bit long but ya gotta know everything....since my car blew one of the heater hoses for the second time (when it wet the engine completely, it quit both times) it has this tendency to just die at random times, and yes let me say up front I have dried everything out both with WD40 and compressed air...ok today I took it for a drive, went to the gas station got fuel and it started with no problems, cruised around a bit (a couple of miles) and while stopping at a red light it just died, no warning just like you turned the key off while it's in gear, I got it to the side of the road and tried to start it, but no luck, popped the hood and looked around and could see nothing...I thought maybe fuel pump, so I got a screwdriver and jumped the solenoid to turn it over and observe the mechanical fuel pump, (the ignition switch was in the off position) it was working, so I jumped it again and the engine tried to start (with the key switch off!) I turned the key to the run position and jumped it again and it started right up, shut the hood, got in put it in gear and it died again, popped the hood tried the jumping trick again and nothing, tried the key switch again and nothing, shut the hood got in and turned the key for one more time and it started right up, revved it up a bit and it ran fine, put it in gear and it died, ok on the phone to get tow truck to come and get me, tried to start it and it started right up!!!. revved it up a bit, put it in gear and it went fine all the way back home (7 miles) with no problems, I have no clue what is the problem, I think it's electrical but don't know where to start.
Sorry for the long posts but ya need information to help me figure this out, any and all suggestions welcome.
Oh it's got a ProComp distributor and coil about six months old, and Ford Racing 9mm wires.

ive had bad ignition modules act like that. is your procomp distributor one of the hei style?
if so then get a hei module from a parts store and try it in the distributor.

Could it be in the voltage regulator?

I guess I will just start throwing money at everything on the ignition side and see what happens...at least then it will be all new!

the company pro comp is a relatively new company. there products are usually clones of other company's products. not exact clones, they use cheap labor and materials to undercut the company they have copied. with electronic parts that usually is not a good deal. replace that distributer with a factory one, pertronics, msd, mallory, or accell, and you should your problem fixed.

I had the same problem with my 66 mustang, Would run fine then just die and would not start.. I thought fuel because the filter would always be empty.. after throwing some money out the window on fuel related parts, I found the real problem my coil was bad... when the car cooled down a little would start right back up... replaced the 20 dollar coil and has been fine ever since... Just something for you to look at...

Thanks Bryant and Ken, I am going this morning and get another dissy and coil......I had my suspicions about the ProComp, I did buy it cuz it was inexpensive at the time during the car show...before I had the 289 in the car, I will let you know what happens after the change.

Ok so I ordered the PerTronix dizzy (flame thrower) and coil from Summit
Part # PNX-D130711 (dizzy) PNX-45011 (coil) but there is a problem installing the dizzy, it won't seat because the billet housing is slightly hitting the fitting on my intake for my temp gauge, I prolly could grind a sixteenth of an inch off of one or the other but I hate to grind a new dizzy and if I grind the fitting it may start to leak.....aaaarrrrrrgggggg!

Move to temp sending unit to another spot. My intake (A ford 4v) has a number of holes where the heat sender fits. I have mine on the back so as to to be less obtrusive.

Well got it in there, don't like grinding on a new dizzy but I was getting fed up with other ways, the grinding is on the back at the bottom so noone should see it, the car runs like it should now, at least I did a burnout and kept them smoking it thru second gear :D, but I'm still going to carry a hundred dollar bill with me for the tow truck in case it breaks down again.
Thanks again for all the help on this.
