You have a point... But I like to think most of the time when people see a nice Maverick they think "cool car" before it ever registers that it's a Maverick and it's "supposed" to be a cheap sh!tbox. Especially people my age and younger who may not even have preconceptions about the car. See, to me a Maverick is like one of those stupid teenage movies where the geeky girl from across the tracks with the glasses and the Salvation Army clothes gets a makeover and becomes the prom queen. Everybody thinks "wow, she's hot!" before they remember, "hey, that's Patricia McDorkstein!" A Maverick has the right body shape where just a few small styling changes will make it look right at home with the "real" pony cars, and it has the hardware under its skin to back it up. Can't say that about most econo cars of the era. A 20 year old looks at a Vega and he knows what it is, even if he doesn't know it's a Vega. Pinto, Chevette, same story. But like that girl in the movie, the Maverick looked good to begin with as long as you were looking at it in the right way.
