I have a 77 maverick with a 250. I tried to start it, it cranked one time then nothing. I jumped the solenoid with screwdrivers and got the engine to crank, but nothing with the key. I have replaced the starter, alternator (twice), voltage regulator(three times), battery, new wires for the starter and battery, and solenoid. Could this be an ignition problem and how do you check it?

    Thanks
    Jerome

Sorry check the fuse probably blew when it tried to crank the first time.

Check your red/blue small wire at the starter relay for power while someone turns the key to crank/start. If you do not have power, check the neutral switch, if it's ok, check the ignition switch. The neutral switch is the usual culprit. Try to start it with the gear selector in neutral instead of park. If it starts, the linkage can be worn or loose anywhere from the selector to the transmission.

    DOA starter solenoid?
Had one from autozone... after arguing over whether or not they existed with their latin salesperson sporting his honda gear....
May want to also check and see that the rod and switch on the top of the colomn are aligning and engaging all the way, sometimes seen them rust on the pickups a bit, and it'll bend the rod preventing positive engagement.
