My 302V8 will not stay running. I'll start it and it will stay running as long as I hold the accelerator in. As soon as I let off the accelerator, the engine will sputter and die.

How do you set the fuel mixture on a 302. I know how to turn the screws, but I cannot get the engine to idle I've started with the screws at 2 turns out and moved it out from there. No matter how far I let out the screws, the engine will not run.

Also, there is a popping noise in the exhaust whenever the engine is at low rpms. I bought a timing light so I could reset the timing, but I can't reset the timing until the engine will idle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm really stressed out about this.

Turn the mixture screws all the way in until the gently bottom out. Then back them out exactly one and half turns. You should be real close to adjustment there, with a minor turning either way.

4dr73mav; sounds like the floats are too high, or maybe too low. If they are too high, it will flood the car out. Do you smell a rich condition at the exhaust? If so, lower the floats, adjust the air mixture screws, and see if that is the problem. Might be a vacuum leak, also. Check for loose, broken or cracked vacuum lines. Good luck!

    Thanks,

I'll try that tomorrow morning. I was wondering if it might be a stuck needle in the carb. I forgot to add that the carb is leaking gas out the front. There is a tiny little hole on a piece of the carb that gas is coming out of.

    I'll keep you updated.

I know this is a dumb question, but how do I lower the floats? This is my first car that doesn't have Fuel Injection.

I found the problem. The accelerator pump diaphragm was blown. Gasoline was leaking out. I replaced the diaphragm and sprayed the inside of the carb clean with cleaner. After adjusting the idle mixture screws, the engine is running great.

    Thanks,
    Jonathan
