    Craig,
If you ever get hit in your Focus, your opinion will certainly change. If it ever does happen, I hope you are not injured badly.

One of my friends (a Maverick owner) had a brother who was killed in a Focus just one year ago. It folded up like a tin can...

I prefer to live by the golden rule. Any well crafted car, regardless of origin or reputation, gets a nod of respect from me. I am a live and let live rodder, and I agree 100% with Wes' post above.

I used to have a bog block Cougar Eliminator. I got my ass handed to me by a 401 Gremlin one night. I used to own a 428 CJ Mach One. It got beat too. I have owned two 302 powered Mustang IIs. Great little cars. I have known people with early V8 Pintos, they were a riot.

The world is changing. As we late edition boomers and gen X'ers grow older and start to take over the car world, our cars will be welcomed and respected more and more. Hot Rods have been a class at the Pebble Beach concourse for a few years now, much to the horror of the Duesenberg set. They even raised the price of the ticket to $125 to keep the hot rod rabble out.

People have opinions, some of them strong. Hell, I can't see why anyone would care about a 4-door maverick, but that is just me.

When someone tells me that Mavericks should be in the same category as the car that started the pony car craze or some of the most legendary trans-am racers of all time, I have to really wonder. Especially when they trash other enthusiasts cars. I find it hugely hypocritical and pretty selfish. But, since I am a "Live and Let Live" kinda guy, it's all good.

BTW, there are precious few mentions of Pintos or any other non-Mavericks anywhere on this board anyplace other than the Off-Topic section. If you don't like off-topic discussion, don't go there and whine about the content. What about off-topic don't you understand?

Thank you, Max. No matter where you go and in what circle you travel, attitudes prevail. I saw it in the motorcycle club I belonged to because I drove a Honda instead of a Harley. Most thought nothing of what I rode, some it made a difference. It didn't matter that I couldn't afford a Harley, just that I didn't ride one. Same thing here.

Getting bent and twisted because the cars are not where we think they should be is pointless. There's more Pinto guys than you think and I know because I've had personal contact with some of them. Their club has easily as many members as MCCI. They think their cars should be more respected also. Should they be? Who are we or anyone else to say. There is an interesting article in the new "Auto Restorer" magazine about Mustang IIs on how they are just now starting to be better recognized. Many Mustang purists refuse to even acknowledge that the '74-'78 cars should have even existed at all. I have a local customer who also owns a Mav and has a beautiful '78 Mustang II Ghia that I'd be proud to own. Who is anyone to say that these cars aren't worth the powder to blow them up? Who should be getting bent and saying they are?

This argument could go on forever. There will always be opposing views among those that have a passion for what they hold important. We feel that Mavs/Comets should be better recognized and respected among our peers, right or wrong. Will they be? Who really knows? We have to remember that in the collectible community, we really are kind of infants. It wasn't that long ago that few considered Mavs worthy of restoration or modification. How things have changed! Now we get awards in our own classes at FFW events, have our own classes in Carlisle, see our cars in national magazines....c'mon guys..things are slowly coming our way!!!

All good things in time, my Mav bretheren........(y)

    Muscle

You know the Maverick and Comet were not Musclecars from the factory at least but as the orginal owner of a '74 Grabber with a 302 I can say many people were afraid of my car. They would say, " that car must be fast " and it had a good repatition. I could easily beat a stock 302 "73 Mach 1, Any car with a small block V8. A Maverick Grabber has much more respect than a Mustang II. My current Maverick has a 310HP 302, C4, 3.55 gears. I don"t do alot of drag racing any more but If need be, bring on your muscle car but, you may need some prozac when you get home. I think Ford did just what they needed to do with the Maverick. They added the Grabber, V8, Comet GT, Sport wheels and tires, other chassis inprovements. Insurance on a Maverick Grabber was cheeper than a Mustang or a Torino. Remember I bought a new Maverick Grabber in 1974 when I was 17 years old. Every dollar counted! There are still people that are afraid to race me today! It would be a discrace for a CobraJet Mustang or a Boss 302 or a 340 Cuda or a SS 396 Chevelle to be beaten by a Maverick Grabber. Just for the record I own a stock '69 Mach 1 with a 290hp 351W 4V FMX, 3.25 gears. My Maverick is faster! So when people run there mouths about muscle cars, I just laugh unless they ask me!:D

Excuse me but this is not the "off-topic" section, and I never whine about off-topic posts in the off-topic section. It was you "Max", who decided to mention Pintos here--in the General Discussion forum. Some of you folks act as if the only criteria for a cool car is if it's fast; well I disagree. ANY automobile can be made to go fast. So what? I personally know a guy here who has a 401 Gremlin and it would run circles around my Maverick, but ya know what? It's a butt-ugly car. We're talking piss-poor styling here, guys. My Maverick has style and it's solid--doesn't rattle & squeak as it goes down the road. I never said it was the fastest thing around, it's not, and never will be. It moves-out pretty good though. To say that "fast" is the criteria for which cars deserve respect, regardless of all any other factors, is ludicrous. A '59 Cadillac "land yacht" is a damn cool car, but you won't win many races with one.

ALL I SAID in my original post here, was that it upsets me that Ford did not make the Maverick a "musclecar" or pony-car like they did with the Mustang. That irritates me. You can ridicule me all you want for not accepting other makes & models who's owners are enthusiastic about. I really don't care. I don't and won't respect compact rattletrap ecconobox disposable cars like Pintos as something worth collecting or even having. I would bet a dollar to a doughnut that more Pintos ended up in the junkyards than Mavericks...

It's not just about fast, it's also about craftsmenship and presentation. Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. It's opinion, yet you present it as fact.

Yes, I mentioned Pintos here, because it was YOU "T.L.", that decided to trash them in the Off-Topic forum.

Nobody is asking you to like Pintos or Gremlins. Just a little tact would be nice.

Here's a little insight for you all.. for all the guys who think Mavericks don't get enough recognition.. It's kinda ironic.. especially if you look at one of the definitions of the word... I say it's good to be different.. i've always said "dare to be different" and being a Maverick owner is doing just that...

Check out these definitions of the word "Maverick"

"One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter."

"Being independent in thought and action or exibiting such independence."

    Just somethin' to chew on..

We have a car that is the symbol of independence.. Hey that's why this country was founded ;) we have true American cars dudes!

That was a heck of a long time ago that I "trashed" Pintos in the off-topic forum, so it makes little sense for you to bring it up here, in the General Discussion section, and all this time after the fact.

Sorry I don't have enough "tact" for you...

I personally think Pintos kick AZZ. They can be made to handle well, go fast and look good. I see TLs point. Sure it may piss us off nobody likes our cars but us, then again I hate Camaros with a passion. BTW check out this Pinto and in the back ground is a certain BADMAV
