next big step on my car is a new c4 trans and id like to put a full manual valve body but idk how good it will be for a daily driver???? also found that they are only for 70s and up but i know of a 67 c4 at a junkyard for 150 bucks is there a difference in the transmissions? or do i need a 70 and up c4 to use on my 72 maverick??. also how hard is it to rebuild and install a valve body in a trans? ive never worked on a trans before thats why im asking so many questions thanks guys

You should use the 72 or later C4 - with the "push-in" modulator instead of the screw-in one on the earlier models. You will also get a stronger input shaft and the most availability on after market parts.
Installing a manual valve body is easier than installing a stock unit.
If you are going to have to buy a core and then pay to have it rebuilt just save your money and buy what you want from Jay at Broader Performance. You can get a 500 hp C4 for $850 (less if you mention that you are from the forums) and he has the ability to make what ever you want or need.

That is a lot of money for a junkyard transmission. Our JY's charge only $65 with converter.

Hi Paul, I've noticed your post above. I have a 71 C4 that I plan on rebuilding. i got an estimate of $800 that would hold about 450 hp. I also heard great things about Broader Performance, in your opinion am I better off rebuilding? or just going with Jay's transmissions? Also, do Jay's C4's need any modifications to fit such as the speedy cable? Thanks

Hmmm...if I had known this, I wouldn't have been screwing around with a time-bomb C4 all this time.

That is a great price, and he seems to have a really good reputation.

i already have some pretty firm shifts, but i doubt it will hold up to 350 hp for too much longer. Just a stock rebuild, no power improvements at all.

I may need to give Jay a call soon. He is probably a 5 hour drive from me, and I have a "core" I can take him.

Jay also has a rebuild kit - the same parts he uses in his 500 HP C4s. You don't get the hard parts but you get the clutch kits and such. If you want a C4 that you can bolt in then Jay is the guy to get it from. When you talk to him tell him "Paul from Seattle sent you" - it may be worth something.
