The guy is in California - I bet he does need it - it is a crime to remove emissions controls.

BusyB187 - the big hose attaches to the air cleaner

I think what Scoop means is you can do without it if you make changes to the tank venting. Not really a good plan to just leave the vapor line open under the hood. Especially an issue on fill ups. All those fuel vapors are dumping under the hood. That vapor line is also close the cowl which is the air intake for the heater box.

Mine is getting this one come Springtime. It can only ad to the factory look. Besides I'd rather bolt this on than go under the car and change the venting. I think it will look good plumbed to the breather.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
It's a federal crime to remove it no matter what state you live in. I'm just running a hose with a filter on it. No cop will ever give you grief over it out here. There's a bunch of guys running shaved firewalls and engine bays.

Three hoses? Mines only got two. I took this photo and posted it sometime ago for someone, maybe it helps too.

It the pic above and below, you can pop the little blue top off of the center post. A hose does not go there, its a vent for the canister (but does not vent fuel vapor) so if yours is missing that then it could like a hose goes there. If it is like these ones, then the smaller hose runs to/from the gas tank. And like stated earlier, the larger one connects to the air cleaner housing.

the cap allows air to enter the canister to allow the fuel vapor to be drawn into the engine by the slightly lower pressure inside the air cleaner. If removed will look like a big vent. If you have 2 small ports, is this the original canister or one you got from elsewhere. Trucks with dual tanks or cars with dual vent valves might have used 2 as well as later model vehicles.

If you don't have the stock air cleaner housing you can drill a hole (some have a knock-out) in the bottom plate and use a fitting for the hose. Yes! it is needed for safety as well as evaporative emissions. Those vapors can cause a fire!

You know, when I put mine back on I didn't do anything in the way of cleaning the charcoal by rinsing or whatever. To this day no more smell inside. Anybody know if they can be cleaned with anything to refresh the charcoal?

draw air through them. The air will pick up the vapors. If it's saturated with fuel (liquid) it would definitely take longer. we replace them in that case. If it's full of water, you probably can throw it away. I don't think you can run water through them.

rig up a small vacuum line to manifold vacuum and use the engine to purge it. Idling for 10 minutes or so will do it if it's not saturated.

Activated charcoal is made (activated) with high pressure (tempurature) steam. you would have to use that process to remove the impurities that clog the pores in the charcoal.
