Im buying my first 302 engine today for my 73 maverick. It's coming out of a 73 ford mustang. The engine runs fine but I would like to rebuild it. Any idea of what parts intake/carb/etc to put on it to get the most hp and not rob the bank? :hmmm: Please let me know.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Intake: Performer/RPM/Weaind stealth. Carb: autolite/holley/carter/edelbrock 525-600CFM range. Then throw in a 260/272ish cam with less than .500lift. You should be able to get all of that new for around $700. Or probably $200-500 used. You can also throw in a set of hooker 6901 headers, with some good mufflers. Plenty of pep :) most of the guys on here are running this kind of setup. If you want more power swap a set of GT40 heads, you can usually find them for under 500 rebuilt. And they will probably give you the most bang for the buck.

How much money you have to spend is in direct relationship to how fast you want to go. What is your intentions for the car? Daily driver, weekend crusier, all out drag car, etc.

Im building this one slowly but maybe about $2,500 just on the engine. I dont want to spend anymore than that on the engine alone. It will be everything you mentioned below daily drive, drag car

Seriously...how many times will you actually take it to the drag strip and race it?

I would never really drag race it. just would like some get up and go be able to spin some tires, piss some neighbors off and dust a few people. :yahoo:

Well....now that we know the direction, and the budget, we will be better to assist you.

A lot of what you actually want to accomplish can be done with ZERO dollars invested. :D

Seriously though....I am sure others can help now that they know what is going on.

If you're going to buy a motor to rebuild, I'd pass on that 73 motor and find a roller 5.0 motor to rebuild, preferably from a 94-97 pickup or van, or a 96-2001 Explorer or Mountaineer. Lots of times these need no rebuild, just use em as is and replace the intake and distributor with a carbed setup (like what maverick75 suggested) & replace the stock rockers with 1.7 full roller pedestal rockers. You'll get a tire melting motor that'll still get decent fuel mileage.

Pull the valve covers before you buy it! Also check the date code under the starter!

I would go this route, and add some gears.

Agreed. Gear change is a great bang for the buck upgrade for improving acceleration.
