Got a question for ya'll Chrysler / Jeep techs that work on Jeeps. The 98 Grand Cherokee we recently bought has a gas leak. It only leaks when you fill it up, and it seems to be coming from the top of the tank, right about where the lines go in. I have an exploded [bad term to use when talking about a gas leak, lol] diagram that that shows how the filter/regulator goes in the recess in the top of the tank. I'm thinking the leak is in that area, maybe a gasket under the fuel pump mounting plate or something, but the diagram doesn't show how that is mounted. It only shows the "O" rings on the filter/regulator. I know I'll have to drop the tank to find out for sure, but do ya'll know of anything I might need to look for that is common to leak on these vehicles? I was thinking that when I had the tank down I might as well put on a new filter/regulator. Good idea or not? Going to wait until it warms up before I pull the tank, so we are keeping it around 3/4 tank so it doesn't leak right now.

sounds like your gonna have to drop it no matter what. not a common issue that i know of. i have seen on a few cars where the filler outlet seam came apart. check that for sure..and the filler hose . other than that..gotta drop it to know for sure.

    any evap codes?

No codes no lights, filler tube looks ok. Leak is on top, not filler tube side. Thanks

Dang, get a day off and it's 27 degrees at 9 AM. No way I'm gonna pull that tank in these temps. I'm ready for spring so I can get some stuff done!

Cant say I've had them for leaks up there. Done lots of failed fuel pumps. Maybe it had a pump put in and they messed up the seal??

That's what I'm thinking Darren. The exploded diagram I have doesn't show the seal or pump mount, only the filter/ regulator. I thought one of you techs that see these every day might give me a heads up on something that might be common on them so I could possibly get the seal or whatever ahead of time to minimize how long I'll have to have it down. Chances are, if I drop it on a Sat, it would have to sit until the next Sat before I could get a part and put it back together. And if wifey doesn't have her ride, she'll have to drive my pickup, and she'll fuss all week....:rofl2:
