Okay, I think I have the muffler picked out - Flowmaster 2 1/2 inch single-side-in/dual out. Since I am working on the exhaust, I figure I might as well replace the catalytic converter while I am under there (not me really - I don't weld). Some of you may remember I still have not passed emission. I am pretty sure the carb rebuild and gas tank replacement will probably fix that. (Carb was NASTY) But if I have someone weld in a new muffler, I might as well have them put in a new convertor. In addition, I am sure the new ones have better flow than the 36 year old one attached now. Now the stupid question - Is there anything I need to consider in order to maximize the airflow. Is there such a thing as a performance catalytic converter. Don't live in CA, so any converter will do.
up here in washington if you fail emissions, you can take your car to a shop and spend (i forget exactly how much but its not a lot) and you take the receipt for proof of trying to fix the problem, and if it still fails they pass you since you 'tried' to fix it
Just went to JC Whitney to window shop. Would you do a "Direct fit" which does not indicate any performance increase but easier installation. OR they have a universal performance one that indicates excellent airflow and increase performance, but has to be welded in place. Anyone try one of these? http://www.jcwhitney.com/universal-...ates/p2017955.jcwx?filterid=c12679d631y1976j1
I went and got Antique Plates for the car, but when Matt starts driving it to school, the plates will have to come off. In Tennessee, antique plate only allow you to drive it on weekends and to car shows. We almost passed emissions last time, so I really think the carb rebuild will probably make it pass now. Did I mention how nasty the carb was. She sounds so much better since her "little trip to the spa"
if you taking it to an exhast shop to get the muffler welded in they should be able to get you the best cat for your car. i doubt a direct fit will be any easyer than a universal one for and exhast shop to install.
X2 just call your favorite exhaust shop, they prob have a universal high flow on the shelf. Direct replacement in my opinion is only neccasarry on newer vehicles and not even all of them just the special ones.
ok,,,, i will be the dumb one! i thought you did not need a cat on anything prior to 1977. or is that just certain states?
different states have different smog requirements. ca requires cats to be on any car that was equipted with them. california smog tests 76 and newer cars, but requires all cars to keep there original or approved smog equipment.
They are required on all car 1975 and newer in Tennessee. That is the year that they became standard equipment on all cars. But TN is more lax than Ca. They just have to have one, it doesn't have to be original or meet Ca. requirements as longs as it passes a tail pipe emissions test.
Hum - 16yo with a Cool Car. No need to worry about him showing off. Why do you think I refuse to let him do a 302 swap for at least one year, probably two.
For sure, i think back to my teen years hahahahaha and wonder how im still alive fwiw in TN if you gte a ticket for the antique tag there is no fine you just loose the privlage to hold a antique tag on the car for a year
