Ditto, you must use a dwell meter to get it set right. And then checked every few months to keep it right. That was the problem with points, the rubbing block on the point set wears and changes the dwell setting. Replace it with an electronic module and all problems associated with points goes away.
Words of wisdom! If you drive the car much at all this little mod will pay for itself in short order.
If you want to keep the points (some of us do) then get a dwell meter and find out what works best for your car - as long as it is within specs. I find that 28 degrees works best on the V8s for me in my vehicles. Yours may be different. The gap is .017 - .018 on my distributors.
get the pertronix setup they even have them with a rev limiter that you adjust with a quick turn with a screwdriver under the cap or you can go with the setup that i bought ¿ the powerfire distributor on ebay for 159 http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=powerfire+distributor&_sacat=See-All-Categories but now they sell them at summit for the same price http://www.summitracing.com/search/...-Distributors/?keyword=powerfire&autoview=SKU works great for me
nothing like a distributor hood scoop if going with this distributor you will need new wire's may i recommend the moroso wires they are suppose to be better than the MSD wires and they look sweet and have shrink wrap on all of the boots ( and only like 60 bucks ) at summit get the ones for the 90's 5.0 mustang
