Gary, what transmission do you have? Column or floor shift? Manual or automatic? If manual, there is a lockout that prevents the key from moving to LOCK unless the car is shifted into reverse. The automatic has the same lockout, but it must be in park. If your transmission is into the proper gear, check the little linkage that is part of the column that "tells" the ignition it is OK to move to lock.
I've done this before and it isn't funny. Either forgot to put the car into park and the key wouldn't come out and I had a fit for several minutes until it just dawned on me. Also had a Bronco II that once in a while the gear selector wouldn't go all the way into park position and would lock the key into the ignition. Several times of sliding the selector up and back through all the gear and back into park normally the key would come right out. Have never seen that issue with a manual trans. but most of the manual transmissions that i have ever have weren't stock and didn't have the safety switches hooked up.
Hey this might help. I have a 72 Grabber and before I switched it to stick a few years ago mine one day just wouldn't give me the key back! I was super frustrated until I discovered the collar for a column mounted shifter was for some inexplicable reason located on my steering column with a mounting point for the shifter with no shifter there. My Grabber had the floor mounted C4 shifter so I thought it was weird that the column shifter collar was there. Well it still rotated and when I turned it viola, the key came out. Took a long frustrating time to figure that out
Yep, have seen that happen b4 also. Shifter moved from Column to floor and the shift collar on the column got bumped out of place and even thought the floor shifter that is in use was in park the collar on the column wasn't in (what used to be park) and locked the key in the ignition switch.
this happened to me and locked the steering wheel going down the road... i had the the key lock before so i had an idea what was wrong. all of thoes locking parts have been removed from the steering column now... ......
Oh Shiiiot!!! bet that was skeery at highway speed to have the steering wheel lock up. Did you have to go home and change your skiveys?? I prolly would have.
