My blue 72 is a 6 digit dso car...it has a factory trac lock diff and 3:23 gears as well. So I guess special order cars could have trac lock diffs huh. My car was also a Washington state fleet vehicle assigned to the state police...Go figure That said briansboy, perhaps your car is a factory trac lock car as well...
COPO - that's funny ............. Careful or we will get the boss 302 with a 4 speed rumors going again .........
Exactly .... that is why I am wondering if he has a special order DSO too. State police MAV, that is cool .........
Got info direct from second owner, who was state employee. He purchased the car at state auction in 75'. Also contacted Kelleher ford in seattle Wa. Where car was originally ordered from. They corroberated much of the info I had on the car from research and the last owners personal testimony... I havent gotten a Marti yet...Afraid to since I have modded the car and the original engine. I would have a personal pants kicking party if it turned out to be a one of one...
What does special order DSO mean? Does this mean the guy who had the car ordered it that way from the factory?
Domestic Special Order or District Special Order: instead of a 2 digit code for the DSO on the door tag (doorjam) - there will be a 4 or 6 digit code, indicating the car was a special order. Take a look at your tag and see what it says. Your build sheet if you found it would really help to, as it has all the info on it. Since DSO is on the rear tag (something I have never seen before) my guess is yours was a special order. Picture from the shop manual:
You say it looked factory. Just a questions for you as I believe that for the right money you could basically order whatever you wanted from Ford at one point or another. I have seen options on cars that were NOT supposed to be available but they were sure enough there. Anyway my quesiton is, when you removed the third member (center chunk) did each of the studs have a nasty little copper washer around them behind each nut?
What does that have to do with anything? Without the copper washer the 3rd member will leak at the housing. I always replace the copper washers whenever I install a chunk
Well actually no they won't leak I have removed the copper washers and not replaced them and know a few people that refuse to put them back when they replace a center chunk because it make the center chunk a real PITA to get out. The center chunk in my car was removed and replaced by me about 3 years ago with no copper washers and has not leaked a drop since. I used the gasket and some permatex and threw those nasty little copper things away. Hahaha So basically the reason I asked is because often when a center has been removed not everyone always puts the copper washers back.
I always told my Dad that I thought he was mistaken about his 72 Grabber because he always swore up and down that his Grabber had a 3:55 rear gear ratio and said his top end on that car was some where around 90MPH Everything that I could always find about Mavericks said that they only came with the 2.7?:1 or the 3.00:1 so I just always assumed that Dad was mistaken about his rear gear ratio. But the more I learn about these cars the more I know that people special ordered them with stuff that wasn't standard factory equiptment and Dealers added things on that weren't in the brochures. So maybe old Daddy-Pops was right and maybe there were a handful of special order Mavericks out there with Trac-Lok rears in them too. 4 lug 8 inch with a 250 I6 in front of it doesn't seem like a likely candidate for a trac-lok but it sure looks like the guy that started this thread has one.
Now that you mention it, it did have those copper washers on it all the way around. Personally I have never rebuild a rear end and used washers.
Well now that that's settled how about some more picture of your AWSOME Comet GT with some COOL angles? I've always had a soft spot for the GT's. Note the neighbors 50's Pontiac Chieftan was that the name? It had an amber Indian head on the hood.
