i know im young and new to the forum but i wanted to share my story of how i got my maverick. it was late at night (12:00 AM) and i was almost asleep on the couch watching star wars episode III when the phone rang, i picked it up and it was my dad and he said "hey, i just bought you a car. it a 1971 Ford Maverick Grabber", keep in mind i was only 10 years old and this didnt concern me at the moment, prior to the call the day before we had seen a 1969.5 maverick. my dad bought it for about $300, we pulled the title and found out it was a one owner car from D.C. the car is also one option shy of full options and has only 58k miles on it. needless to say i think we struck gold. i just wanted to share my story, please feel free to share yours aswell
I got mine when I was around 14(7 years ago). We moved into my grandmothers old house after she passed away. There was the maverick, my dad had bought it in 94, before him my uncle had it since 91. It only had 56K miles on it. But nothing worked. And the weather out here did a nasty job on the interior. But basically i learned everything about cars because of it. Then two years later I found this forum and it made everything alot simpler
i actually copied this post from a previous thread but felt it fit here!! a guy gave it to my uncle bc he owed him money for a job i did at his shop so he gave it to me. he described it to me as the older equivalent to an escort! the guy who had it drove it till he burst a brake hose the proceded to use it as a dumpster in his frt yard. it was full to the tops of the head rests with everything from a 200 ft roll of copper wire...$$$$$ all the way to dirty diapers and streaked grown man drawers!!!
I was 15 (17 years ago) and trying to decide what kind of Ford I wanted. I knew I didn't want an old mustang. Was thinking about torinos and Falcons but they all seemed too expensive. As a Freshman in High school I saw a Blue 2 door Ford that looked cool. It was a small bumper Maverick with Weld wheels and big and little tires. Looked fast. I told my dad I want a Maverick. A couple weeks later he tells me he knows somebody that bought a Maverick to pull the engine out of and need to get rid of the car. said it would cost $100 delivered. well who could say no to that. I walk home from school one day and it was dropped off during the day and sitting in the driveway waiting. My friends laughed. It was mustard yellow, big LDO chrome strips, surface rust and glue from the previous vinyl top, sitting high in the front because no motor, headliner hanging down, ripped up bucket seats. I saw potential, it was a solid foundation. Over the next year every metal panel that could be unbolted, except for passenger door, was replaced with better/straighter pieces. Bought 2 other Mavericks for parts and a motor. Both parts Mavericks were actually in better shape than the car I was building but I was already dedicated to this one and wasn't going to start over. It took about a year and a half for me to have it done enough to drive and register it. At first it was just a 302 2bbl., headers and dual exhaust, c4. Primer gray outside but painted and complete interior. the nice blue Maverick at school was lined up next to me one day at lunch. The kid thought his car was soo much nicer than mine. So we got on it leaving the light. I walked away from him pretty easy. It ends up the car I envied that made me want a Maverick was a 6 cylinder car and the kid didnt know anything about it except for Daddy bought it for him. I built mine from nothing and had much more pride in it. Oh and none of my friends laugh anymore when they see my car, just surprised and glad I still have it.
