I have a 1970 ford maverick with a 302 engine straight 6. The engine is deffinatly strong and should run. I kinda need some help if theres anyone near escondido, california and has time and the know how to help me figure a few things out. I got my chiltons recently am going through what I can but I'm a novice machanic and need help with just making sure the engine has what it needs. Last time I drove it, was about 6 months ago it sat at my buddies up north till I got it towed here. When it drove it nearly poped a wheely. It was greatly maintained inside the engine. It's just dusty and looks bad. But its power is just taking a long nap. The steering colum has the ingnition rod stuck at "ON" and thus bumping the silyniod is how I used to start it. Took the starter in had it checked its fine. l have a lose hose I believe is a crankcase vent hose located behind the air filter close to the back of the head. I don't know where the other end goes as I could'nt find the other side within a diagram. If anyone could help me out I would appriciate it.
Does your car have a 302 (V8) or a straight six (200 - 250) Fix the ignition switch rod and check to make sure the switch is ok too. Having the ignition in the "ON" position will fry the points, overheat the coil and drain the battery. If you are talking about the PCV hose it has to connect to a vacuum source - so you also have a massive vacuum leak. Good luck with the project and I hope you get to pop some wheelies again soon.
no its a 302 straight inline 6. To help me with this if anyone has a picture of where the hose plugs in ill post a picture of the problem. I need a picture of the engine right side looking down, left side also and from top side looking down through the engine. ANd also if you could possibly take a pic with your cam sitting on the radiator cap looking towards the starter so I can see the hose mounts under the air filter. Again its a 302 straight 6. 1970 maverick body. I beleive the 302 was for 1972 and was placed inside this chasis. But I am told this car is completly stock.
there is no such engine. my shop is in el cajon. its san diego gear and axle. if you want to bring the car down to my shop i can look it over and give you advice. my car is there if you want to check it out and another member on this board is there with his maverick sometimes also.
OK so i got it to start and man did it roar like a mofo. I clearly have a vacuum issue as stated above and I am going to post the pics. purhaps I can get some mechanical light on my engine.
reply to your post on my post what the hell are you posting here for... I would actualy love it if I could invite you over for a BBQ and mabye beer if you drink. just to take a quick glance at my vehicle and explain the things I don't know. I have been inlove with this car since I got it. It is my first engine I owned. I am inlove but need help. I am a machinist and need only 1 time instructions. I could possibly pay up to 65 dollers for a inspection from a mechanic thats familiar with fords mavericks. I bought my chiltons just to help me walk around the engine. It's information is limited so I am asking faithfully for assistance. I am trying to rebuild the maverick for a daily ride that owns the road.
based on the pictures my guess is you have a 200 or 250 straight six... possibly mistaken by (302) or your Liter conversions, a v8 block, has 4cyl on each side, and is shaped like a "v" you will see two valve covers. They are just giggling at the mis-interpretation... no worries! it is possible that your six has been bored over though... but understand a "302" on a ford forum is referencing the cubic inch displacement, not in liters (a v8 is a 5.0L)
I went to kragens autozone ect. and asked for the 250 starter it was wrongly speced and the helper said clearly that a 302 engine was put in my 1970 and its non stock. which is also why the starter didnt fit correctly. I dont mind any misinterpretation but insults are not welcome. I can litterally build the engine on a mill and lathe but I can't assmble it without a manual. My question for you other users. Is this a 302? a 250? The engine says 3.2 or 3.3 liter. stock or not I need help. I am trying to rebuild the engine and possibly sell it. this engine isnt cheap it pumps like a river and roars like a beast. The engine is so strong is made my car lurch forawrd like it wanted to smash our dryers into nothing. The engine is in prestine condition on the inside. I really only have some minor crap I know nothing about. Beer, burgers, shots, on me my house has it all. call me after 3pm. If I don't answer leave a message about the maverick I will call asap!!!!~ 4253015765 ASAP now tomorrow call me please!
if it's only 3.2 or 3.3l then it CANNOT be a ford 302 v8, they have 5.0L of displacement... so you are running a 200 straight six, if the 250 starter didnt' work? possibly reference to soemoen who knows more about the straight sixes, i'm a know nothing with them... v8 all the way baby.
Noticed you mentioned autozone... lol... they also were the ones who tried to tell me that the starter solenoid on my maverick is "part of the starter" ecause EVERY car is made that way... watch who you trust at auto parts stores... starter not working was becuase of the dr9ive gear not engaging right? due to flywheel differences? Possibly?
listen, 3.3 liter v6 straight inline. or 3.2 liter I can't figure it out!! guys at the autozone try to say its a 250, THE PARTS DONT MATCH!! I was told that I have a 302 engine thats non stock by maverick 1970 and is a 1972+ engine model. according to kragen. The beast runs and roars like a sick drag car. I Deffinetly have a vacuum problem with the posted images. If you know about my engine please explain its specs and the placement of those 2 hose's, stated in the secondary image. Name indentification is ok I can write c++ I can deffinetly learn the manual.
i am listening, but it's simply not making sense. a V8 or V6 have either 4 or 6 cyl on each side, two valve covers, and the block is shaped like a "V" hence the "V" where inline, is refered to as i250 or i200 etc where the blick is one row of cylinders and you have ONE valve cover, the carb and intake will sit off to the side of the cover instead of between the valve covers. Inline has ONE head and "V" engines have TWO Take a moment, go out, look at it, and see if you have a "V" block or an IN-LINE block, that way you can get proper help with people who are experienced with each. I understand that a part for a 250 did not fit, but that doens't mean neccesarily that you aren't using an inline block, the guy at autozone, did he come look at it and tell you it was a 302? or did he look up parts in the computer, realize that mavericks were made with both inline and V engines, and "assume" that since a part didn't work it must be the other engine? instead of giving you the help you needed?
from the pics posted its a I6. that means its not a 302. sence it runs really strong then its probly been replaced with a I6 that has had some modifications. i do not know any thing specific to be able to identify wich I6 you have. sounds like you have eliminated the possibily of it being a 250. i recomend spending time on this site http://www.fordsix.com/ they should be able to help you with all your 6 cylinder ford questions. as for any thing maverick specific then this is the place to be.
