Hey y`all today I`ll be pulling the C4 out of my mav for a rebuild I realy don`t have the money for it but I can only back up I don`t hav 1 2 or D , when I can get it to go it slipps realy bad. I hope it won`t be as much of a PITA as it looks like .
I was wrong it was way more of a PITA than I thought it would be . The tail shaft got caught on the E brake cable that I didn`t remove like I should have and I think that I may have bent my flexplate but I won`t get mad about that untill I take a look at it I have plenty to be mad about now any way . Having help wouldn`t have been a bad thing , all well I never have help.
I did but only 4 or 5 quarts come out , the rest came out when it was ontop of me tilted to the right . I couldn`t use my friggin jack its broke now too , I just have the best luck ever
elliot, i pulled one and had it built. when i put it in i didn't get the converter in deep enough and tore up the front pump . i took it to a shop and had them fix and install it . no more trans. work for me. i leave it to the pros...frank... p.s. i saved $125 by pulling it and putting it back in. then i had to pay him $125 to pull it plus the cost to fix what i messed up.
the job is a lot easier if you have the right tools. i always put a plastic bag with duct tape over the rear of the tranny. still, i always seemed to make a mess. a friend lent me his transmission jack. what a difference. i went and bought one from harbor freight the next week. was on sale for $49. used it a couple of times now. makes the job a lot easier. also while you have it out, get a drain plug for the pan at one of the auto parts store. makes it easier to drain. good luck.
71gold yea I know what you mean about seating the converter I`ve only had to do that once but I took my time doing it . Don`t worry I know a good tranny builder thats gonna show me how to rebuild it for purdy doggone cheap . don graham I put a drain plug in my tranny pan a cuple of years ago and that was a good 8 bux spent . My jack started leaking fluid so it was useless I`ll need to buy a new jack and a tranny adaptor before I go trying to put it back in so I don`t screw more stuff up . Rick Book oh triston ? after I (well him too) unbolted the convertor it was time for his nap so I made him something to eat and had him lay down, sides I realy don`t think that he is strong enough to lift the tranny off of me .
Hang in there Elliot, If it were easy anybody could do it. Everytime you do something like this you learn, whether from mistakes or doing it right. Knowledge is a good thing. Dan
yeah had the same probleam recently but i was doing a tranny and engine swap so i just yanked my engine out again, because it was only secured on by the engine mounts, and put it together on the ground. then i just lifted the whole assembly into the car and bolted it up. it made it really easy to do it that way.
I just painted the engin and got it looking nice so I din`t want to scratch it all up other wise I might have pulled it out that way. I checked out my flexplate earlier today and all is well with it thank God because its a brand new TCI "racing" flexplate .
I rebuilt my C-4 I used to have in my old LTD when I was about 16, wasn't a huge deal. You just have to be really careful when you're taking apart all the planetary gears and all that ****. Keep it exactly in the order it came out, set it up on the bench just how it looked in the tranny. Then go through it piece by piece, replace the clutch packs and seals and all that happy stuff. A local transmission shop should be able to hook you up with a rebuild kit for about $100 bucks. It's up to you whether you think you're capable of doing it and want to tackle it head on. If you start taking it apart and you notice some of your planetary gears are literally shredded and chunks of metal are all over hell (that's how mine was), you might want to seriously consider getting a junkyard tranny or new valve body and torque converter and rebuilding that one. Just my two cents. A few tips if you decide to do it yourself. As someone said, you have to be careful when you bolt the tranny up and slide the torque converter in. The torque converter actually goes in another inch or so if you really play around with it and wiggle it around. If you don't get it set back all the way into the housing, it'll just rip the hell out of everything when you fire her up. Also put a quart or two of fluid in the torque converter when you reinstall it. Also, put fluid in via the fill plug if you have one or dipstick tube if you don't before you start it up (I know that's pretty obvious but I thought I woudl throw it in anyways). Oh, and get a book that tells you exactly how to set the bands and what to torque everything down to. I torqued everything down to spec and it worked beautifully. One last thing, if you get it all done and it's not shifting right, try adjusting the modulator valve on the back of the tranny, it can make your tranny shift at higher or lower RPM's.
