Ok i need some advice i have a mess of a car and i want to resolve it myself. I purchased a 71 Ford Maverick last year and have had trouble up and down with it. Ive fixed it and had it fixed over and over. This problem is over my head. I'm very amateur with this stuff so if you do give advice please do so in a manner that would be easy for me to find. OK here is the deal currently my car starts idles really low and when i give it gas it dies. Directly before this issue i was experiencing a series of issues from massive hesitation poor performance bad gas mileage sudden dieing and sputtering. Ive checked the spark plugs (black soot on them) i've checked all my vacuum lines they are tight and fine. Ive tinkered with the fuel to air ratio however i may have very well done it wrong. I don't know where to go next so if anyone has any advice i would love to hear it. thanks

Sounds like the carb needs to be rebuilt, or the ignition system should be gone through... If neither has been done recently I would do both.

Is rebuilding a carb a difficult task?

Not particularly. Just get the right kit, read and understand the instructions before you get started, and ask us if you need anything clarified.

Retarded ignition timing will cause all of the above symptoms. What exactly have you fixed over and over? Manual or automatic trans?

I would start with the ignition system, get a piston stop to verify that the balancer is not slipped first then go, inspect cap and rotor, plug wires, and set the base timing.

A haynes manual can go a long way with little or no experience. Very helpful and some instant help, then if still having problem come here. Lots of people willing to help :)
