Now that we swapped the holley carb in there I wanted to check the HP. I went to a dyno place nearby which charged me $127 for 2 pulls. Very pricey and the guy running the place seemed a little "much". But, they got me in within an hour of me calling them, great service, straight up. Last time I dyno'd with the C4 and edelbrock I got 181hp , 280tq. This time around I got 195hp and 262tq. I was making hp up until 4K but he shut it down because I was detonating. My AF was lean all the way up until 3.5K and then went to 13 but then after 4K I was smoking black out of the tailpipe.
here is my first dyno sheet with the C4 and the edelbrock. we don't think the secondaries really opened up right on the edelbrock. and here is the one I did today. the top graph is torque and the lower is HP and the very low one is AF ratio.
Cool now the fun begins. You get to learn how to tune a Holley. That lean mix isnt helping with the detonation. You need to get that lean issue sorted out. What carb. did you put on it??
I was told that maybe one of my spark plugs is dead. The lean reading might be caused by air and fuel getting sucked into a piston that's not firing. I have a 10.5 power valve and my vacuum reading is a little under 15 at idle.
A stock 302 is only pulling 15 at idle? That would trouble me right there. What kind of timing curve do you have set up? What is your initial timing set at? clint
Ah, now your talking my language. Oxygen content. Your right, Lean means too much oxygen in the exhaust gasses. So on a carb engine too much oxygen can be due to it not being burned. Whole different ball game with injection but we dont need to get into that. Your on the right track so long as you understand lean means high oxygen. Guys tend to get mixed up with rich and lean terminology thinking it refers to the amount of fuel. 15 for vacuum is kind of low I would think assuming your cam is stock. Might want to double check your gauge is accurate.
so one thing we noticed today after pulling all the plugs and changing wires is that one of the spark plug wires was shorting because of a break in the wire insulation somewhere in the middle. The other thing we noticed is the most rear plug on the driver's side wasn't looking a little on the white side. All the other plugs were looking gorgeous tan in color. The gaps were around 35. I set them at 43-45 and installed all new autolite 45's. Definitely feeling more power, no doubt about it.
oh and by the way pulling the spark plugs was not as hard as I thought it would be. I was prepared for the worst. But bryant has all the best tools. this little ratchet came in very handy.
i think the runner to that cylinder has a vacuum port in it. you need the check it for a vac. leak. that would explain why its leaner than the rest.
you mean the intake runner right? I'll take a look under there during my break. the car runs so nice though with these wires, what a difference. thanks for all the help yesterday.
