I recently bought a 1973 maverick 302 and i just got the engine working and sounding pretty nice. I back out of the drive way to go around the block b4 i park it in the back to start doing body work, and the steering wheel wont turn the car. From what i can tell, the steering column broke loose from the steering box. Im guessing their is a way to reconnect the 2 without replacing either 1, but im not sure how. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol its not really the drive shaft.
There is a coupler that connects the steering shaft to the gear box. You may need to replace it. Check that the bolts are still one.
Its called a rag joint and is available from most parts store. I have seen them in the "Help" section.
So how difficult is it to get the rag joint on because it seems like its fitted on to the steering box. the one thats on there now is ripped to shreads and i still can get it off. im probably going to have take off the master cylinder to get it out, and then see what i can do. thanx and what do u think?
Ok i thought i would need to take the steering box all the way out and i could lift it straight up by removing the master cylinder. so i just put the new rag joint on n slap it back together? lastly, the piece on the steering box that holds the rag joint on arent bolts i can screw off, they seem like guide pins or something like that, that are rivited. so how do i get the rag joint on the steering box?
There is a bolt on the collar that goes on the steering box side. Take it out and it should pull off. You may have to replace the pins with parts that are in the help kit.
yeah sorry guys if ur still chexing this thread out, but i fixed it with no problems thanx for the advice:bananaman
