Hello everyone, I just recently bought a 75 Maverick. It has been stored and not used for over six years. It hasn't been running too smooth so far and it's been kind of irritating me. I noticed that there is a metal line coming from the carb which has been cut off (purposely) or cracked off i think, but I'm not sure what it's for or where it's supposed to be connected. My car has been not idling steady and gets the shivers, and when I step down on the gas pedal (alot), when i let go, she just dies. Can anyone help me out? Please? Someone also told me that the vacuum hose connected to my egr valve isn't opening it up.
Welcome. Okay we need more info. What part of the country are you from? Many of us get rid of the egr system all together. It cleans up the engine bay and its one less thing to worry about. As for the metal line can you post a picture of it?
the carb probably needs a rebuild. the broken metal line is probably for the choke. it should goto the exhast manifold to bring hot air into the choke for it to open up. is your car a v8 or I6 motor?
Its a 200CI I6...And yes I heard someone say that it's for the choke. I'm from Newfoundland Canada, how do I get rid of the EGR Valve altogether? How does getting rid of the EGR valve make the car work better?
Getting rid of the EGR won't make it run better unless you make other changes along with its removale. Essencially you have to re tune the engine to 1969 specs. Carburetor needs to be richer, timing needs to be set up for a different curve. To completely remove the EGR you need to remove the carb, spacer and manifold to drill and tap the EGR passage and plug it with a flush fitting pipe plug. Then install a carb from a 69 model on your plugged manifold or you can go with an aftermarket manifold and carb that don't have the EGR plumbing. Note: removing emission devices for street driven vehicles is against Federal law and carries a large fine.
Is the EGR supposed to have constant suction or just when you step down on the gas pedal? Another thing I've noticed is that when I cut the wheel all the way over, it makes noises that I would compare to a turkey. Is that right on an old car? But I don't believe this is right...sometimes, when I'm turning the wheel, it makes those noises even when it's not fully turned.

Not right now, it's warm enough out. First, you should flush the fuel line, change the filter (Canadian Tire) should have it, and get the carb rebuilt. If it's been sitting, it'll need it. If the steering is making noise, it could be low on fluid, or the pump could be noisy (it's old, they are)
It's only when I start turning right...and you can see the belt loosen or tighten when it it making the noise, it mostly happens when the car isn't moving.
