i have found a 4 speed side loader thats local and has been gone thur and freshened up has the bell housing i need , racing clutch and pressure plates for 500 bucks. what else do i need to make this work??? im looking at swapping from a c4 would the stock drive shaft work? and i know id need to find a clutch petal assembly and what would i need for like a flywheel and back up light switch and neutral switch?? i think thats all that i would need to make the swap i haven't bought the trans yet making sure of what i would need before i jump into it
You'll need the shifter too. Flywheel will depend on what imbalance your motor needs (28 or 50) it should be a 157 tooth bell. And if I'm not mistaken, the Ford T10 has a 25 spline output shaft, so you'll need a matching slip yoke for it too. Hurst still makes the shifter and installation kits.
ok so shifter i might have covered he might have one to go with it and i have a stock 302 nothing special just a 4v on it so what flywheel would i need?? and i still have the stock c4 in the car so that would mean i have a 164 flexplate can i still use the same starter? ok cool so the length of the drive shaft wouldnt have to be like shortened and re balanced i just would need to change out the front u joint with a new yoke???? thats the biggest thing for me not to jump and get this trans is the drive shaft im doing this on a budge so id like to reuse as much as i can
Some T-10's have a smaller input bearing retainer and will not fit snug with the bellhousing. Don't begin to think the bolts will keep the transmission align because they won't. The fit needs to be one the money or you will wear out the input bearing.
I dont understand what you mean by that ? Id like to know if i can use the stock drive shaft and even the crossmember and then what other things ill need to make the sway ?? Anyone out there that has done the swap from c4 to a 4 speed its a side loader but i would think its the same length as a top loader
Some T-10s are longer than others. Some shifters are mounted to the back of the tail housing and others are mounter further to the front. With the longer T-10 you will need to shorten your driveshaft. You may have to cut an opening in the floor to fit the shifter - you migh have to make an adapter to get the shifter into a position that works. Swapping components can be as easy as a stock installation and other times it can be as complex as making parts to fit and having to cut out supports and making new ones. It is rarely a simple process.
Ok so should i get the measurements from the guy of what the bell houseing and the sideloader together is before i even think of buying it Or how much around-bout would it be to shorten a drive shaft and have balanced
well, you are going to need that information to know whether it fits or not - that would be a good start. On the plus side the crossmember should work as long as the T-10 is from a Ford - they were used in other cars as well.
Here is a pic on my T-10 bellhousing and Toploader transmission. The bearing retainer on the Toploader is bigger in diameter and wouldn't fit the bellhousing. I had to cut down the Toploader bearing retainer on a lathe. If you put a T-10 in a bellhousing that was made for a Toploader the hole for the bearing retainer will be too big. This hole needs to fit the bearing retainer or the transmission will eat input bearings on a daily basis. The bolts holding the transmission will not align the transmission in the correct location.
oh .... i see now but im pretty sure id see that when i bolted them together if they mated together flush or not thanks thou ill be calling him in a bit to get the measurements.
Just because transmission and bellhousing fits flush doesn’t mean it will work. The hole in the bellhousing HAS to be the same size as the bearing retainer.
ok so like how to double check that its the same size????? i just went out and measure my trans and its 30-1/2 it seems so that would mean i can use my stock drive shaft just with a different yoke?
A tape measurer or ruler works every time. Best I can remember it is only a 3/16" difference between the two retainers.
