looking at getting a new c4 to be rebuilt and im looking in putting a full manual valve body in it. mind you im building a daily driver with a once and a while trip to the track if the full manual valve bodies good enough to hold up on daily driving? also the junkyard im going to get a transmission from has 75-80 for a core c4 needing a full rebuild or a used one for 225-250 but would still need to be checked out by a shop. which one should i go for? and what is the difference in the dipstick in the pan and the dip stick in the case? which one do i need? thanks guys

No problem at all using a manual valve body on the street, in fact I think it's better for the trans then the regular ones are..... I would definately get one rebuilt rather then trust a junk yard trans to hold up.....

You can use either a case or pan fill, I prefer the case fill cause the bell housing is a little more compact and leaves more room around the headers/exhaust.....

    Hope that helps.....

ok so the difference mostly in the bell housing???? i need a new bell houseing anyway so that might just work out for the best so either way case or pan ill be set as long as i get the right bell housing with it thanks

Make sure you have the correct flywheel and converter for which ever one you use..... All dip stick in pan versions are 164 tooth flexplate/11.4375" converter bolt pattern, and most case fill's are 157 tooth/10.5" converter bolt pattern(except for Mustang II which is even smaller, and 82 and up have 164 tooth).....

If you swap to the larger bell housing (pan fill C4) then you will need:
    1. the larger converter
    2. the 164 tooth flex plate
    3. the engine plate (block plate) for the larger bell
    4. the larger bell that bolts to the case rather than the one that bolts to the front pump bolts.
Internally the two C4s are the same as long as they are for a V-8 and after 1972.
The only advantage to the pan fill is a bit of added strength at the front of the case (which rarely breaks anyway).

ok nevermind just checked what tci converter i bought when i was replacing my stock one and it was a 10.5 in so that means i have a factory case fill and need a case fill with bellhousing so i dont have to change my flexplate torque converter and starter right?

The bell housing, converter, flexplate and block plate all have to match. The starter will work with either setup.
The factory C4 in Mavericks was a case fill, small bell housing C4.
The pan fill C4 has the dipstick tube screwed into the side of the pan.
