I bought one about 5 years ago no problem, but I called my local Ford dealer last week to purchase the charcoal canister cardboard tube mentioned above, and was informed that they are no longer available. Does anyone have another source for it?
Yes, NPD has them, in two different diameters, 3/4 and 5/8, I think those are them. But they do sell them... Richard p.s. National Parts Depot = NPD

I don't know what the "common" mod is but if you have ever opened your hood at night and seen the display that old wires cause I would vent those fumes somewhere else. I would also at least install a fuel filter on the end of that line to keep dirt out of the lines. It would probably never get to the tank but it could eventually clog the line and cause a vacuum lock on the tank that you could spend a lot of time tracking down. The canister is there to collect the fumes and then burn them in the engine when it first sarts up - getting rid of the fumes without evaporating them into the atmosphere. If the car is stored for long periods not having the canister could cost you in fuel evaporation because the canister would build a higher vapor pressure and slow the evaporation in the tank. It would also let the vapors build up in the garage - that might become dangerous unless the temps were kept very cold. The likelyhood of fire or explosion hazzard is actually very low but having it vented under the hood would raise it some.
