i just graduated from high school and my parents had a 1971 comet just laying around for a while and they said i can have it but it doesnt run yet it needs a new battery and a new carborator plus some cosmetic work and thats it.

does any one here know why my car goes through carborators really fast my parents had to replcae it like 3 times already is there something that can be fixed so its a little easier on the carborator?:hmmm:

Carbs don't go out like that. Unless there is more description as to what is going on, I would have to say that, based on the age and you said "laying around for a while", it could be rust from the tank messing it up.

That does'nt mean that they need to be replaced. Usualy a good clean out or rebuild will get that carb working again. Regardless of that, it would be a good idea to go through the entire fuel system to ensure clean fuel is being delivered. Our tanks are usualy found to be rusty if they have been sitting for a while.
How long sisnce the brakes been looked at? If you can get the car to go you certainly want to be able to stop.
Get ready to start getting us some pics, we love pics! :D

:Welcome: We are picture whores so post them up!

also carb's are not that hard to rebuilt, and its a lot cheaper than replacing them. Basically the kit is around $15-30.

BTW: what part of cali are you in?

Welcome cometchick71. There are alot of Comet owners on here that are very knowledgeable about these cars. The Mavericks are of course, very similar to your Comet too. So you have come to the right place to ask questions, and to learn more. Congratulations on your car! Good luck.

Welcome to the car world. :Welcome: If you want to see a real nice comet, pick up a copy of Modified Mustangs & Fords. There is a nice article on a 74. The carburetor issue could be a variety of issues. When a car sits for a while, the gaskets can dry out and things could loosen up. Mine had sit for a year and I ran some fuel system cleaner through a couple tanks of gas and then changed the fuel filter. Then a good tune-up and it ran a lot better. Enjoy you cool car.:drive:
