my car is now on the road with a motor swap, transmission remove, rebuild, and reinstall. has new breaks and exhaust. and it only took me 8 months!:16suspect here is my question. how long does it take you to pull a motor and transmission, and swap in a different one? not rebuild it but actually pull and then install.
A lazy weekend with the wife out of my hair and a case of beer was all I needed. couple trips to Napa auto parts.
I can have my 200/C4 out and sitting on the ground in 45 minutes. Did a V8 swap on a '69.5 in 6 hours from the time it drove in the garage with the 170 to the time it backed out under it's own power with the 302. Could have done it faster but we did a lot of goofing off, etc.
About 5 days of 4 hours a night, that's including the three times we had to drop the trans (don't ask).
ive had simular results. we'd do alot better but everytime we all get together for some "gear wrenching", we end up half drunk and completely off task lol
About two long evenings at my buddy's house ... oh yeah, and an additional 11 weeks or so to finally have headers that bolted to the 351. He got really tired of looking at my car ... we don't speak much anymore. I was living in a condo at the time ... no garage. The story gets a bit longer, but I think I'll stop now ...
pulled the motor out of mine and put it back in after replaceing the main seal in about 2 1/2 hours but alot of beer was drank in that time so it coulda been quicker.
I've had a roller motor sitting on a stand for at least 6 monmths. that would be the start of the transplant. I see no end in sight for this motor exchange. pulling trans? I'm getting pretty good at that. about an hour or so
i took me about 2 hours to pull my motor. could have done it faster buy why rush. nobody is paying me flat rate to work on my own car. then it took about 6 months to put the new motor back in.
man it would take me less time if i could ever get my block back from the machinist. going on 3 months now for a simple clean and rering of the block. sick of the flakiness of machine shops, never had a good experience from a machine shop. i am on my 6th engine i've built by myself over the years on various projects.
Before my back injury I used to swap my daily driver built engine and trans for my fully prepped race motor and trans in my '69 Nova in about an hour after work and be off to the drag strip. Now it would take me more than a week to do the same thing since the blown out disks in my back allow me to work for a limited amount of time and that's it. If I push it too far, I end up laying flat on my back, not moving, for a day or more and not moving well for the better part of 4 days if I'm lucky. -Scott H.
