I'm always taking my aluminum valve covers off to polish & to change my spark plugs. I use the Felpro blue rubberized reuseable gasket. I've had them on the car for 10 years now, They refuse to leak... The cost is a little high, but well worth it in the long run...
aw. i wish i had seen that before I got the regular rubber felpro a second ago (and I walked to the parts store cuz my exhaust is apart lol). when you clean the valve cover what do you use? maybe carb/brake cleaner or some other solvent? Light it on fire and douse it in acid? lol
hmm. and if I'm cleaning it should i run some oil along the gasket when i install it or put it in dry? - I'm thinking of way too many questions about this for it not to be in the chilton's lol
Permatex makes a gasket tack adhesive that is designed to hold a gasket in place during assembly. Brush in the can stuff. I apply a very light coating of this to the valve cover, then stick on the rubber gasket, then another very light coat onto the rubber. Been doing it this way for 40 years. It prevents the gasket from shifting during install and keeps it in place once the cover is torqued down. Permatex® High Tack™ Gasket Sealant Fast-drying all-purpose sealant dries to a highly tacky, non-brittle film. A reliable general adhesive. Remains effective under temperatures of -65°F to 500°F (-54°C to 260°C). Resists gasoline, oil, antifreeze, axle lube, kerosene, propane and butane. Level 3* Suggested Applications: Valve covers, fuel pumps, carburetors, manifold gaskets
Awesome! Thanks! I have that exact stuff. Use it all the time. I think I would feel better with something else in there. I'll give it a try!
