You guys just remember that when you go to lift the hood there will be a flash..I know first hand. It will be hot and startling and could even cause injury. Be very careful. Hopefuly no one has to go thru this.

Sorry, don't always know who I'm talking to or how much they know... Judging by the gallery pics, you would think power brakes on a Maverick are exceedingly rare. I almost never see that brace in pictures and I've not seen another one in person.

I checked it out tonight though, and it looks fine. After I cleaned everything up, it looks like damage is limited to plug wires, distributor cap, coil, (the coil is VERY burned and still works!) and the air cleaner's a total loss. (Oil-soaked K&N burns like a tinderbox!) Also burned up the oil pressure gauge line. I have a new copper one to install, but at the moment I've just pinched off the existing nylon one with a pair of vise grips. Will probably fix that tomorrow.

All in all the damage was pretty light. Gonna rack up quite a cart on Summit I think, but I've done worse.

    :yup:

Indeed there was. I turned my face away from it before opening the hood fully. It was quite a show. I might have taken pics, but I was busy finding and then using the fire extinguisher. Plus you guys would have (rightfully) thought I was nuts.

I'm sure we are good with the after shots.
I was wondering why the vise grips were there lol.
I had an applause after I put the fire out lol. I did get a big head that day. :rofl2: It was intense for a few seconds.

Looks like it's going to be a joy replacing that gauge line.

I didn't have power steering and AC in my way the first time :slap:

Might be able to get at it from underneath, with the oil filter removed, ya think?

Yeah, I thought of you when this happened. I remembered your tragedy and knew how lucky I was. That was one bad situation.

What the status on that anyway? Are you rebuilding it? Got another one? Hadn't seen you on here in a while...

Mine's on the road again. I put an old air cleaner I had on it, a couple of mismatched plug wires, a well-placed pair of vise grips and it's ugly but it runs. I still can't believe the distributor and coil work... I'll have it all put back right in the next couple of weeks.

U may be able to get w/ the oil filter off as stated. I don't think u'll make it, esp., w/ a York style comp,PS pump and fuel pump in the way. At least, I cud'nt. Are u going back w/ plastic line or copper? Im using plastic but leary abt it for just the same reason - fire. I have my line plumed from a waterpipe nipple and carry a plug just in case the line fails; I can install the plug. Hopefully B4 the engine is scarpmetal.

    img_0173_original.jpg

BTW. The PS pump is off for rebuild and compress. was removed for eventual upgrade when I made this pix. If ur able to get it frm top w/ all this stuff on - Let Me Know How U Did It.

    Sounds like a challenge :D

Copper. I ran a nylon one for a long time with no trouble, copper scared me a bit because I would think it's more prone to getting kinked, but this fire convinced me I needed to abandon that idea. I think I'm going to run the copper line through a length of vacuum hose to help protect it.

We ran copper back in the day "60's" B4 there was any other choice, "at least to my knowledge". It worked very well.
I just decided to use the ny cuz it came w/ my new gauges. Im an old-timer but not opposed to new ideas/technology. I suppose if I were, I wud'nt be here on the net and forum. I like the clear line cuz it's transparent and easy to work w/. So "SIX IN ONE HAND HALF-DOZEN IN OTHER". :bananaman

Right, they both have advantages and shortcomings, for sure. That's why we have a choice.
