Hey all... I was wondering if anyone has done the conversion from drum to disc and what all they had to do to accomplish this. I have a 1974 Mercury Comet that was GIVEN to me and is in pretty good shape (considering). I want to start by converting the brake system... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
it's been done about a million and one times. visit the "technical" section and look under the tech article and you'll find a complete write-up on everything you need to know
or pm me if you cant find it i do belive i have all the instructions that tell you everything you need. so i could send that to you.
Depending on the rotor/disc setup you plan to use......some are easier than others, but it is a great improvement to stopping power!
Look for 74 and later Mav/Comet or pre-80 Granada/Monarch spindles, rotors, and calipers. Some 73 Mavs came with discs, but they were smaller than the later ones. You will need outer tie rod ends to match the spindles, and new brake hoses, otherwise, fairly easy swap, and you will really like the improved stopping power. 4 wheel drums are pretty scary on the same roads shared with modern cars ... good starting point for mods...
Are you converting the rears only? I thought discs were standard on the front for '74? Mine has discs on the front.
my 74 has drums all around right now but i got my spindles, calipers, drill sloted rotars that was just rebuilt for $250 along with directions the guy bought from Ford for $25.
