#1 an old tractor inner tube on top of a piece of plywood being slowly inflated, does not work as a transmission jack (admit it, it is a cool idea and the pictures would have been great! if it had worked. but it didn't.) #2 custom torque converters don't always fit our flex plates, and need to be lathed down. this is made more difficult by the transmission shop being a 1 hr drive away, one way! #3 installing the transmission using 4 people and 2 floor jacks is not a hard job. #4 removing the transmission because you forgot to install the starter plate, using 4 people and 2 floor jacks is not a hard job. #5 installing the transmission using 4 people and 2 floor jacks is not a hard job. #6 trying to figure out why installing the transmission, locks up the engine will cost you 2 bloody knuckles. #7 the engine turns much better when you only bolt on the bell housing a little and then tighten on the torque converter, and then the rest of the bell housing. #8 there is a very satisfying feeling that comes from finishing a job.
I learned that trying to install a T-10 lying on your back after working a 10 hour night shift was a dumb idea
#4 removing the transmission because you forgot to install the starter plate, using 4 people and 2 floor jacks is not a hard job. MAN! I HATE that one! You are not alone on that one I promise. Sat there and made a list once and still left the darn thing out. Did it on my daughter's 3.8 Mustang not 5 months ago AGAIN! Something needs to be done about it. Tie a string on your finger? leave post it notes all over the shop? I don't know? yeah a tractor tube inflating and lifting the tranny would have been a cool video. They use balloon type things to lift wrecked ships off the floor of the ocean that have been there a couple hundred years. I would think a tractor tube would lift a tranny. lol clint
#2 custom torque converters don't always fit our flex plates, and need to be lathed down. do you have a picture of what you lathed down? ......
"custom torque converters don't always fit our flex plates." if you had it...custom...made, did you tell them it was for a 157 tooth flexplate... 10.5 bolt pattern. i've had converters custom built for my AODs and C-4s. the only fitment problems i've had was i had to sand the paint from the snout that fits into the end of the crank. what does your mod do for the...warranty...of the converter? i just sent my converter back i had made for a 164 tooth flexplate. i'm having them convert it for my new 157 tooth 10.5 bolt pattern flexplate. they said they would turn it down (as you did) and then check the balance. I had the thought and means to do it myself but this way my warranty is still good. Frank
i sent in the flex plate the second time and they matched the 2. it was done for free and it was done by the place that built both the T.C. and the transmission its self. the warranty is intact.
