I like mine to idle at 550 in neutral, and 500 in gear. But that is just me. I want the car to rock as each cylinder fires and the engine surges. Makes it feel bigger than it really is. Freaks out the children in the minivan next to me, also. :D

But 750-800 is a fine idle speed. I used to do 650/600, and that was fine.

Don't want to go too high. some carbs kick out of the idle circuit at around 900-1000 rpms, and start running the primary circuit.

check for vacuum leaks. If there's none run it at 800.

first visually inspect all the vacuum lines, replace any old looking ones.

If you cant find the leak then step number 2 is to spray the lines with carb cleaner or starting fluid

if the engine fluctuates then you've found your leak.

    Yup...It does.
If your idle isnt steady and you dont have any vacuum leaks or valvetrain problems. Your carb may be set too lean causing the engine to surge...

to set the fuel mixture screws you should use a combination of a vac. gage and tach. hook the vac gage up to a manifold vac port. now what your trying to do is get the highest vac reading you can. adjust the idle mix screws about a 1/4 turn at a time alternating from each one. as you get closer to ideal the idle speed should go up. readjust the speed to where you want when it gets to high. once any adjustment makes the vac drop you have found the ideal mixture point.

I like my idle set as low as I can get it without stalling at an idle.
On a stock engine that is about 600 in Drive.
Where you set the idle will be determined by the cam you use and the converter that you have.
