ok after 3 hours of trying to get my car started then finding out i had my dist. 180 degrees out then i finally get it started nothing leaking just smoke from the headers which are new. its at a really fast idle 1800rpms just letting it warm up so i can set the timing and im watching the water temp is make sure its warmed up so i can set it and its climbing and climbing up to 230 and was slowing really i shut it off then about 5mins of it sitting there to get up to that temp i know this is not right it shouldnt really go over 210 right?? whats wrong? ive had the motor apart idk 5-6 times now i dont feel like doing it all over again for another time
Most likely culprit...Air pocket in the cooling system. You have to fill em about 2/3ds' of the way then run it and top it off as the air escapes and the T-stat opens. If you havent done it yet...I recommend removing the T -stat and drilling a 1/8th inch hole in the face of it (below the sealing edge) and installing it with this hole at the 12 o'clock position. This aids in the removal of air from the cooling system as you fill it with coolant/water. Leave the rad cap off while doing this, Turn the idle down to a normal level as well (unless you are breaking in a new non roller cam).
ok yea stupid me forgot that i need to refill it i did ( dont have any holes drilled thou) and started it again water temp dropped too 150 -160 i let it idle for 10 mins and dropped the idle down to 1000 rpms ran good then i backed it back in to the garage for the day have to go to work but thanks i think its all good just need tuning on the carb and timeing set
