to make power power on a 302 thats naturaly asperated you have to spin it up high in the rpms (7000+) this is really pushing the limits of stock rods. people will say that they do it all day long with stock rods, then others will say that they once went over 6000 and threw a rod. also compression helps make power. so with that in mind there are lots of heads that will support your power goals. afrs, victor jrs, tfs, etc. the key to the heads is that they match your combo like every thing else does. for intake you should be looking at the victor jr. for a cam, check with a cam manifacture once you decide what heads your going to use. also the torque converter manifacture will want to know every detail about your motor and car to get you one that will really work well. what i would sugest doing is a supercharger. that way you dont have to spin the motor to make big power.
see thats the kind of info i was looking for. there are a ton of combos out there but im looking for the one that will help the most power. this is the cam im thinking of going with http://www.jegs.com/i/Lunati/638/30613/10002/-1
Before you spend money on a PA transmission look at Broader Performance C4s. They are better than PA and less than 1/2 the cost. Jay is a great guy to work with and he will make it fit your application. His reputation is spotless and if I didn't build my own, I would buy from him.
dont build the motor/car around the cam. get the cam that will work with the motor/car your building grasshopper. it looks like you geting an idea of what the peramiters of your build are. choose heads and an intake that have matching rpm power bands. you can choose a cam just from that info but you would be beter to call a few cam manifactures and tell them what you have and ask what cam they recomend for you. that will give you the best results.
yeah im actually looking for the (true) powerband to be between 2500-6700 rpms. with my truck i was able to mix and match i have heads that make good tourque and a cam that makes big horsepower. it actually ended up working out perfect but with a car bas light as these i want to go all hp.
ok so with everyone clearly offering thier opinion it seems that there is only 2 people who have given me some ideas on what to do for a top end setup. anybody else got any ideas?
I think the advice is solid. . . I found out the hard way . . . I purchased my block (1995 302) back in 2006 and then purchased a 331 stroker kit later. paid for the machining of the block. then last year dediced to finally assemble the short block. the shop that assembled it had to basically redo the machining and I needed new pistons since I decided halfway I was going with a supercharger. then I come to find out that with the 331 and supercharger I will be pushing the limit of the stock block. you see, I'm hooked on nitrous and really wanted to use it but unless I use a spray can to spray it I will probably blow that block from what everyone tells me. Sooooooo, plan ahead now and either adjust your expecations or really setup properly for what you want to do.
I guess you don't care about spending twice as much money for the same end result either, do you ? It's your money, go ahead and plunge into this completely blind and stop asking for advice. You obviously already know what you're doing.
Ok...... Going .040" over on a factory 302 block is NOT a good idea especially with a stroker. Easy to split a cylinder wall with any decent amount of cylinder pressure. And this is what you get when you're "checkbook racing." You don't have a clue what you're doing.
